I believe there used to be an article on Car and Driver about it too but this is the only one I can find. I don't know if they still use them or not but interesting article anyway.

These were the ones with the Cobra drivetrain and manual tranny, right? I agree that these units make a good jumping-off point and it poses the question: Why is it such a big deal for us to add a manual tranny? If we all went with the Tremec 5 speed extra heavy duty (P/N M-7003-R58H) rated at 600 ft-lb torque. (don't use the M-7003-F 6-speed if you have too many mods as it can only handle 440 ft-lbs) then we'd have a rockin' car for sure.
BTW: I heard that the Mustangs they use all get crushed after a few years at the track becuase they have spent their lives flexing and stressing and would be considered unsafe for private use. I guess the CVs with their full frame don't suffer so badly.
Didn't know they had switched to chevy's though. Interesting. What do they have for performance rear wheel drive?

It has the non-supercharged cobra powertrain. It's the 320 hp Cobra motor, not the superchaged one.

Exactly. At 320 hp, and about the same torque, the 6-speed should hold up nicely. Once you supercharge, though, look out. The 5-speed super HD would be the answer.
We should really start a thread to see just how serious, and how many members would really like to go the manual route. Its been talked to death, but without any real statistical analysis.

I had contacted them in the past about a cobra-vic but I was told that all their cars are not street-legal and the asking price was close to 30k if remember correctly. Too much imo for a car that can't be driven on the street. But you do get one hell of a car for that.
