March 13, 2004 was the first time I saw my Marauder. I think I owned it within 30 minutes of meeting it and I really haven't had a single regret.
In my 35 years, I'm now up to 15 1/2 cars that I've owned (not counting a 1978 Mark V that I drove in demolition derby). After 2 years of ownership, I'd say the imperfect Marauder is everybit as good as any of them. Had Ford priced it right ($29,999) & offered some sort of X100/S-55 package with a six-second flat 0-60 time and mid-14 quarters, I don't think we'd be driving rare cars. Ford's loss, our gain.
We've got two kids... our first came just 3 weeks prior to the Marauder and our newest is 7 weeks old. So far, plenty of room and plenty of vroom for everybody. In fact, for the annual 1400 mile roundtrip beach run, we leave the BMW wagon at home. I really like the 528, but the Mercury is a worldclass highspeed, long distance family hauler... with a double emphasis on hauling!
Last week our 2 year-old learned how to say "MA-wa-WER" all by himself... nobody taught him. I've yet to hear him say Porsche, BMW, or even Mustang.... although he does recognize our F250 and calls it "truck".
I just read Road & Track's report on the new Caddy STS-V... for $77,000 it offers performance comparable to a supercharged Marauder. Outside of a need for conspicous consumption, I can't imagine why anybody would spend that for the very nice Caddy when a S/C Marauder could be put together for $50,000 less.
To those of you selling your cars, I hope you're as happy with your next purchase as I am with my last. As for me... I'll be driving this blue car until it quits... now to get on with saving $50,000 by buying that hoopercharger!
Happy motoring,
Greg
