FYI:
Marauder "clickety-clack":
I just cracked 2,500 miles on a trip to Las Vegas. Upon my return to Los Angeles yesterday, I noticed a VERY subtle "clickety-clack" noise also (see "My axles needed to be replaced" thread below).
Marauder "whine":
Upon receipt, my Marauder whined 100% of the time (with no correlation to RPMs)--apparently from the cooling fan. The whine came from the engine compartment, not the rear end. When I took it in to replace the power steering pump (which failed the first day) the whine magically disappeared. They ordered me a new fan assembly anyway (which I haven't yet had installed) and the service writer noted that the "fan never turns off." Should the Marauder's fan be turning on and off normally? My temp gauge is consistently pegged at a nominal temp (after warm-up). Is everyone's fan "on" all the time?
Grand Marquis rental had "drivetrain" whine:
I recently drove a rented Grand Marquis for four days and noticed a definite "whine" which seemingly did correlate to RPMs. Although I couldn't swear by it, it seemed to come from the transmission (or at least somewhere in the drivetrain). If I recall correctly, the whine was audible 100% of the time, although it appeared to be most noticable during hard acceleration (and, I think, the whine's pitch increased with acceleration as well). Additionally, I noticed that this rental also had the "can't-engage-into-reverse-very-easily" problem reported elsewhere. By the way, after A-B'ing the two cars, the Marauder really kicks the Grand Marquis' butt (can we say "butt" here?)! The difference is amazing (and my MM is still stock!).
