I bought the Pioneer AVIC-N2 nav/dvd system and have several questions - I believe there are a couple of guy who have intalled on our cars:
Where did you mount the Hide away unit? I was wonder if it would fit behind/on top of the glove box
Where did you mount the GPS Antenna? Anyone on the inside?
I read one fellow got the steering wheel controls to work - what was required?
And on wiring:
Where did you pick up with Parking Brake lead (color/location)?
Where did you pick up the Car Speed Signal lead (color/location)? Or did you get the ND-PD1 Speed Pulse Generator?
Where did you pick up the Reverse Gear Signal (color/location)?
Thanks in advance!!!

I did install a GPS unit although not the Pioneer unit.
My GPS antenna is on the rear package shelf on the side of the high-mounted brake light.
Get under the dash (drivers side) and follow the brake pedal arm up and you'll see the parking brake switch, use a test light to find the lead you need.
I had to run a wire into the engine compartment for the speed sensor. Under the dash (drivers side again) on the firewall you'll see some grommets. Either feed the wire thru with the other wires / cables going thru or put a small hole in the grommet and feed the wire thru the hole. Or check out this link: http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11372&highlight=speed+sensor
Since my GPS control unit is in the trunk I connected my reverse wire in the trunk harness on the drivers side (again).

Where did you mount the Hide away unit?
Under the carpet, where you put your feet on the passenger side. They need to be perfectly level, and that was the easiest, unnoticeable place to put it.

The pioneer doesn't like it's antenna inside. At least mine didn't. Worked worth crap. I ran mine out the gasket in the windshield to the top of the windshield on the passenger front side.

PAC-SWX from Crutchfield.com, works awesome.
And on wiring:
Where did you pick up with Parking Brake lead (color/location)?
Green wire attached to the park brake.
Where did you pick up the Car Speed Signal lead (color/location)? Or did you get the ND-PD1 Speed Pulse Generator?
No speed pulse generator. Just attach to the grey/black lead on pin 14 of the stock head unit harness.
Where did you pick up the Reverse Gear Signal (color/location)?
I attached to the backup lights in the trunk. I ran amp wires and stuff to the trunk, so I just added one to pick up the reverse signal. Or you can pick it up off the shifter.

Logan - this is great information.
I am, however, not following how you routed the GPS antenna. By chance do you have pics...or can you snap a couple for me?
Thanks again!!!!

Mount the gyroscope box under the console on the transmission hump with the black arrows pointing front and back. Put the antenna anywhere where metal will not blind it. The dashboard is fine. The steering wheel interface you need is by Peripheral Electronics- that can be done two ways; a PESWIX universal infrared repeater or the other one (don't know part #) that plugs right into your Pioneer. I have the universal one in case I ever go with a different unit. The wire from the steering wheel is blue/red on the radio harness, there are TWO wires like that- use the THINNER of the two. The speed pulse is on the radio wiring harness (gray/black) or at the cruise control solenoid. You won't need reverse sense unless you use a back-up camera. The parking brake lockout is a pain and deletes a few features if the vehicle moves more than 5MPH - including DVD video. It is Pioneer's 'onboard nanny' way of avoiding lawsuits from complete idiots. Here's the way I do it on every unit I install; flip the head unit over. The small silver decal about 1/2" X 3/4"- remove it. The two small solder joints need to be bridged together by a small ball of solder but make sure you don't ground them to the radio chassis. The NEW AVIC-N3 has a dipswitch for this deletion!! The unit is ready now for installation but the viewing angle will be affected by the dash overhang. Check out where my Eclipse DVD player is!!

Jeff,
For what it is worth. Kenny (Silver2004Marauder) did the install of my AVIC N-1 and did an awesome job. He works for a premier high end audio store here in SW Florida. My system performs flawlessly...IMHO listen to this man....No offense Logan...

Thanks All!!!
Logan - since you and I have the same unit, did the dash interfer with the angle of the flip up display? How did you deal with it?
Thanks again,
Jeff

97% correct. Logan advised me of same and all worked. Only caveat: the GPS antenna works perfectly INSIDE my car. It's on the passenger side dash right up by the windsheild. You have to clean the area with alcohol and use the provided metal sticky square. Wire runs in gap between defroster trim and A-pillar trim, behind glove box to radio.
Things to look out for: metal blocking GPS signal. Window tint will also block GPS (especially modern metallized films).
I have also heard of popping the grommet low on the right of the passenger floor and run the antenna wire through it then mount the ant on the cowl trim with an L bracket. I still like where mine is the best... no holes!

Kenny was right. It doesn't appear lilke the flip screen on the AVIC N2 will clear the dash overhang.
I am going to best buy to look at a display unit. maybe the extends far enough out that it may be vertical...but I doubt.
My son is really bummed. He bought the unit over the winter and didn't think about it. The car was in storage and we were not able to view the dash until we uncovered it yesterday.
Know anyone who wants a new AVICn2 WITH 5 YEAR WARRANTY????
Thanks for all the input.
For good news, we did install the K&N air instake system...and he's happy and he's getting the 410s install in 2 weeks by Lideo.
Have a good holiday weekend.

I'll give you $10 for the AVICN2.

Instead of selling it Jeff, have it installed like I did mine. You won't get your money back out of it if you sell it. The AVIC N2 is already two years old. The AVIC N3 is already in my showroom with the brand-new AVIC Z1. Paying even $200 for a custom install will negate the losses of buying a double din unit. Food for thought.

I will keep in mind installing where the AC controls are...but I would have to leave that for an expert (and that is not me).
The display may work ok if I can get the radio to mount at the bottom of the opening. The aftermarket bracket has a pocket on the bottom (and it can't be reseversed).
Anyone have experience fab'ing a mount. I could put the pocket on top to fill the cavity.
Thanks again.
Jeff
