I think the reason for the shortage is that the FHP is buying them all. The way FHP drives their Marauders, they probably only get 7000 miles out of a set of rear tires.

I would'nt be suprised at all, if they have a stockpile of them.

On those FHP MM's .....

If a tire should pick up a nail or something ... it's decommissioned

Their safety protocol does not allow for plugs or patching ... replace only.

During the first KDWS tire shortage episode some months back, I desperately needed rear tires and elected to go with KDW2's.
However, the appearance of the car is changed, IMO significantly, giving the car a more racy, jacked-up look.
After the newness wore off I find I like the stock look look better.

I happened to be parked next to a 300A black 03 a few days ago and the difference in height/appearance was pronounced. The 03 looked more "dignified" if I could use that word.

Solution - buy a set of rear KDWS' and keep the 2's as reserve. Expensive lesson.

I know it's not a site vendor, but I have used this place for 4 wheel/tire purchases including the current on the MM.

They have some, for the desparate who cannot wait for the supporting vendor.

BTW, no flamage! I bought my brake pads from TireRack just for the support. I could have bought them cheaper elsewhere!

I think there's no need for flaming whatsoever. If they don't have what you need you can't buy them. :)

And I don't even think it's TireRack's fault, it's BFG that hasn't produced enough to fill demand. At this point if you want KDWS or KDW2's you're pretty much left just finding any place that may have some...

I'll probably go through the expense of widening just so I can find tires that fit!

I had a set sitting in my garage so it was not an issue for me, but it is a real issue for those who are running on bald OEM tires. Someone in that situation should report this to the NHTSA. This is most certainly a safety issue and if enough people complain they will take action.

Just checked Tire Rack, finding that BFG now offers 235X50 in the BFG KDW T/A 2 ( second edition ) for $186, and 285X55 for $ 201. They are much more aggressive looking, and can't hardly wear any worse than Mercs OEMs. I have gone through 2 pairs of rears and 1 on the fronts. Sure, I run em hard, but BFG says thier ment for " spirited " driving. Now, tire sizes came up along time ago, when the 1st tires were wearing on the A models. A member did some research finding that tire size changing will interfear with brake, rotor , and other clearences. I can't find that paticular post ( any help Logan?) but at least check out the look and make your own decision. I not unlike many MM.net members will be intrested in the widest wheels yet, posted by Too Many Fords. Once you can figure out how to mount em, do share the clearences, wheel well mods, and any other problems and succcesses you incounter. Thanks !

I'll bet some "Pin-Head" at Ford got a fat kick back from BFG or at least a nice vacation for putting those crappy tires on our cars!!!:argue: :mad2:

It is a shame I (we) have got to widened rims to get tires with the proper diameter differential to fit!!:help:

I recommend Nitto 420S 255/55/18. They are .44" diameter taller (negligible). These are meant for SUV. This means they can take our weight and our turning forces. Mine have had terrific grip. The tread pattern is cool, too.

Hmmm I get "Unauthorized" when I try to browse there from our .com network.

That's pricey for the front's though, TireRack seems to stock them for $75, in stock.

With the rears at this point whoever has them for those who are in desperate need is what's important more than price. I'm probably good for a little while on mine, the middles are worn though...

You can find many complaints from Marauder owners( here at MM.net) about the BGF, OEM tires and the fast wearing out, especially in the rear. Sure, the supercharged MMs may burn rubber a bit, but even a pure stock MM will rarely get 10K even when driving conservently. What gives ? Most radial tires get 25k+. Since the BFG is currently the only company selling tires that fit correctly, why not but some of the famous BFG technoligy and customer service to satisify MM drivers ? It won't be long before your competition will make a tire that we wil like and buy, so if you move fast enough, you may still enjoy the current monoply on MM OEM tires.

Yup, I'm not sure I want to deal with the KDWS's again.

I'm torn right now, I can probably get a set of 4 OEM's mounted and balanced for around $500 (if I can find them.) I can probably do the KDW-2's for another $100 or so.

Or I widen and go with new Nitto's all the way around which is much cooler and put's much more rubber to the road but now I'm looking at a very considerable amount more.

BTW, I don't know if my tires were new when I bougth the car with 17k on it. They were somewhat worn, defintiely not new. I now have 29k. If they were the stockers, they lasted nearly 30k. (And the last few thousand miles have been especially hard on them!)

If not, and say they were replaced at 10k before I bought the car, they lasted about 20k.

At anyrate, when I get whatever I get, I'll get my alignment redone - my inners in the fronts are worn bad too.

As for the rears, I hear the center wear is just a product of the KDWS's being crummy. I hear the KDW-2's at OEM pressure do not do this.

BTW one thing I don't like about the OEM's is they turn brown. It's hard to get a black tire shine out of these things.

Wow, for all this OEM tire bashing I'm doing I can't believe I'm looking for a set!

Wow, for all this OEM tire bashing I'm doing I can't believe I'm looking for a set! Neither can I.

It's okay to vent, but y'all wanting a second helping of abuse from BFG so badly doesn't add up. There could be two hundred of us here wanting our rear OEM tires reproduced, and I don't think BFG would give a tinker's damn. Just not enough of a demand to get production moving, IMHO. BFG prolly needs a minimum demand, and that minimum isn't here yet. Are any of y'all placing orders to create a demand?

Is it time to move on, gents? Consider other brands and compounds that have greater variety in sizes? I suspect you'll do better when you do, I have.

Woah...It just came to me...The source of my confusion. Here we are so willing and eager to mod our MMs in so many ways to be the way we want them, yet we cling to one specific OEM feature so tightly. I just don't get this...Oh well, just my .02c. Carry on, gents.

I've been trying to come up with a sheet listing all the various size possibilities, both with widened wheels and stock wheels that will fit within acceptable diameter.

I plan to track down the tire brands and models that have those sizes to match all 4 all the way around with same brand/model tire.

I'll keep working on this and post my results. Would be nice to have a central reference point for what tires can be used as replacements.

There are solutions that avoid this. You just have to match up width and aspect ratio to get similar overall diameter.

For instance 255-55-18 is an acceptable alternate rear size and should not cause problems.

I'll also see what is safe widths for the rims. For instance, I think a 265 width rear may be a bit much for the rim width stock...

I have two Marauders, one is stock and the other highly modded. OEM tires all around on the stock MM, planning to switch to front size all around when my rears give up, and only 'cause I have two brand new fronts in storage. Once those go, I go shopping.

My highly modded MM is a Kenny Brown Marauder S car, the first built. What comes in the build, was Pirelli P Zeros, 245/45/18 Directionales in front, 245/50 Assymetricos in the rear, on stock MM wheels. These tires lasted 16K, but very very sticky in the twisties, and great in rain. When I replaced the rears, I used the P-Zero Assymetrico in 285/45/18 on widened MM wheels, and got 20K out of them. Today, I have 245/40 Directionales in front and 245/45 Assymetricos on the rear. I'm good to 50K miles, and I'll use the widened wheels for Pirelli's "Corsa" series radials this summer.

I don't think any tire will deliver the mileage we're expecting, so, I make my decisions on quality of ride and adhesion first, remembering that the better the adhesion, the quicker the wear.

Thank you that is handy. I think last night I had possibly found some matches from Continental, Michelin, and Pirelli, bear in mind some of these options may be H-rated tires. This should be OK so long as the load rating matches up. Any thoughts on H's being negative?
Only concern I would have would be heat buildup during the summer and whether or not with the weight of the car that could be dangerous in terms of a heat and pressure related blowout.

I don't see this being a problem myself, so will include lower speed ratings if I find them.

I'll have to also track down other manufacturers that don't typically make some of the Internet sites, like Cooper.

There's probably others, General, Uniroyal, etc etc.

Personally the main choices that are already available and known (KDW-2's and Nittos) still seem like the some of the best options. I don't expect to uncover a magical tire that will perform excellent, be cheap, and easy to come by.

I do expect to find choices, and things that maybe match the leaders, or tires that might not be quite as performance-minded but are still good choices for our cars.

Just a few quick quetsions to confrim a few things...

Are 255 series tires too wide for the front? I'm just confirming that 1.) rim width in front is the same, 2.) no rubbing issues.

Also, is there any impact in having different diameters front to back? I don't see why there would be, but just confirming. I'm still trying to keep both sizes within the range of stock, and anyway, there already is a diameter difference in OEM.

Also, is there any impact in having different diameters front to back? I don't see why there would be, but just confirming. I'm still trying to keep both sizes within the range of stock, and anyway, there already is a diameter difference in OEM. 1) A few years back, I ran with 255/50-18 on all four corners, and I had some very light tire rub in a full lock turn. No other problems that I recall now, and keep in mind that I do not have Traction Control on this MM, but I have lowered front suspension, one full coil cut from the springs. I have also run 255/45-18 on the front, with 285/45-18 on the rear, a 1.06" difference with no problems at all.

2) I don't believe wheel/tire diameter makes a difference as long as the end result is within ABS/TC specs, i.e. the rear is no more than 1.50" taller than the front. The OEM sizes have a 1.36" difference. My second Marauder has TC, and this past winter, I ran 235/60-17 on all four corners. TC threw an alarm at 50 MPH, no ABS alarm, so, I just developed the habit of shutting it off. Not a perfect answer, but it's what I know, hope it helps.

This may be a very good chunk of info here. This thread and the other tire threads (including my own) I am following because it seems that just as soon as I 'find' tires they become unavailable.

You're welcome, gents.

Here's what's on the #1x now...245/40-18 front, 255/45-18 rear. 1.32" difference, but the speedo is about 3 MPH slower than actual speed. This is the weird part, I also monitor my speed throught the OBDII port, and that speed is correct when compared to my GPS...Go figure?

These tires contribute to the "slammed" look, and I like that. No ABS problems, but again, this MM doesn't have TC.

I ran Nitto NT-555's in 255/45ZR18's on all four corners for awhile and only had T/C issues if I forgot to turn it OFF!!:argue:

The car ran fine and the speedo was off 4 MPH which was easily corrected with the Diablo tuner!!

Now I have the widened rears and 295/45ZR18's out back and the speedo is right with the OEM's with the diameter differential right where it needs to be for the T/C......Life is GOOD!!! ;) BTW.....No vibration AT ALL up to triple digits!!:bows: That never happened with the damn BFG's!!!:argue:

I just hope they don't discontinue the Nittos??

FWIW I talked to my wholesale rep at Tire Rack and found out that some other people out there are selling wider tires (i.e. 245/55R18) size for Upgrades to chargers and 300s, (stock size is 225/60R18), adding to the demand for that size. The good part of that is, if they start moving more of that size, there may be hope for us yet, perhaps another manufacturer will pony up that size for us instead of all of us being locked into the BFG KDWS in stock size.

Well, I had 13,880 miles on my 2003 MM and failed the rear tire inspection! The dealer wasn't sure they could get the tires but if they could they would be $181+ so I went to a local tire company and for $159 each balanced etc they put them on right away. Meanwhile I had called BFGoodrich and they said I could have the tires but needed to prove I was a Marauder owner to get them and they would be about $200 each - ya right! They also said I should have gotten 20k miles out of them and to have the installing dealer call them - they did and TOO BAD!

I guess it looks like I have to write a NICE letter to them to complain about the tread going bad in 13,880 miles!
Anyone else dealing with the same problem?

I'm assuming your tires were bald in the center as that seems to be the case with every MM owner. I will be getting my new rear tires early next week, Hallelujah, I have 32,600 miles on them with NOTHING left in the center.

I just did that, no problems, no regrets at all. Now I can rotate them at will...so if the rears wear more in the middle, I'll swap them into the front and deflate them to force more wear to the outsides. What a plan.

I just got a call from my tire guy. He asked me for my Registration card info so he can super emergency order my tires. They've been on order since Feb.:mad2:

I spoke with Dave at BFG customer service this morning. The first batch of tires has been shipped [and recieved] to a Tire Kingdom warehouse in South Carolina. Any Tire Kingdom store can order these tires now, and have them within 2 days. The tires are still being produced and this run will total several thousand tires. BFG has no plans to discontinue this tire, as they enjoy having the market to themselves. Dave said our situation is similar to the 94-96 Impala SS, as they were the only ones making that tire at that time.

Stay tuned...

I had to cough up a VIN# as well. I don't know if that means I am 'priority' or not but it is good to know they are making them now.

I will probably buy another full set shortly so I don't get caught without like this again.

If you buy an extra set be sure to store them in a cool place as they will get harder in time and though they will wear well the compound will be harder and potentially dangerous!!

A buddy of mine in the tire business used to store boat trailer tires in the attic of his store and they would become harder pretty fast.....Had no complaints from customers though since they would last about twice as long!!

I might be in a position to help out a little...I've still got one rear tire left over from the Hulk. When I moved out here last fall, at the time my car was delivered the movers had succeeded in flattening one of the rear tires. I bought a fresh pair from Tire Rack, but I was left with one intact rear, with only about 7,500 miles on it. Tread depth is still good...I know that only 1 doesn't help much---folks are looking for a pair---but maybe somebody will want it...

Let me know.

I've found a few close matches in my travels that were interesting, you can get Toyo Proxes for the front but alas, not the back in 245 or 255 trim.

The BFG KDW2's are next choice for a good reason, they are available. Appears the Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's are also available in a match set if you go with a 255 rear. Also, the Nitto 420S as magindat mentioned.

Some very close matches from Cooper, Khumo, and a Toyo, Dunlop, etc. The 255/55/18 is a very popular tire - for SUV's. If you want super swampers in back you can find those easy!!! :D

BTW, on Cooper tires website I was looking at a 275 width tire, and they said the approved rim width was 7.5-9.5...so...are they safe on stock rims? How about 265?

BTW, on Cooper tires website I was looking at a 275 width tire, and they said the approved rim width was 7.5-9.5...so...are they safe on stock rims? How about 265? Keep in mind that correct wheel width affect tread wear and road adhesion both wet and dry.

Mounting a 255 wide tire on a 7.5" wide wheel may fit and look okay, but the tread will roll around to the sidewall and not ride flat on the road. Likewise, mounting a 255 wide tire on a 9" wide rim will stretch it out and cause the sidewall to roll under and make contact with the road. Neither condition is healthy for the tire, nor delivers true "bang for the buck" return on your tire investment. Here's a general "rule of thumb" on wheel width, IMHO.

205 to 225 = 7" wheel

235 to 255 = 8" wheel

255 to 275 = 9" wheel

285 to 305 = 10" wheel

I learned my tire stuff from Brad Grissom, Kenny Brown's "Dr. Tire" and former Pirelli tech. However, as stated, this is my personal opinion, the rules I live by and I'm quite pleased with the wear and handling factors I get out of my Pirelli tires. Your results, as well as observations and opinions, may vary.

For whatever it is worth, I just bought 2 front tires and 1 rear tire from Discount Tire Direct on 4/26/2006 (KDWS). They matched Tire Racks price for the 2 front @ $170 delivered and one rear for $126 delivered via UPS Ground by 5/2/2006.

My original tires lasted 34000 miles before the center wore out on the rear and the inside edges wore out on the fronts.

FYI I completed the research, OEM's are listed there though I did not list out all sources for them. This thread indicates a number of sources for OEMs.

Yep. Discount Tire Direct shows them in stock at their Texas warehouse.

Hopefully others will have them in stock soon. [Fingers crossed...]

GOD help FOMOCO if one of us is injured or killed due to slick rears and unavailable OEM tires for our cars!!:shake:

In all of this lunacy we should not be forced to widen rims to get other tire options!! Ford should work out a recall, give us "Marauder Style" 17" wheels and recalibrate our PCM's to accept a wider range of available tires!!:argue:

BTW.....I'm totally satisfied with my Nitto setup but to do the changeover cost me almost $1600.00.....totally worth it but still absurd!!!

Ford really let us down on this one.....THE END!!:(

They'll blame you for burnouts...I don't think they have any clue how much of a joke the KDWS tire is.

I got two of the BFG last week from Discount Tire for the rear. The front ones came from Tire Rack. All were in stock and were on my front porch the next day. I found out how to get them from this forum. I would still have been floundering around if I hadn't read it here.

For the metro Detroit folks,

I just had the rears replaced today with BFG KDWS by McCormack Racing in Lincoln Park on Fort Street. Fun shop, lots of racing rubber, and the guys are very knowledgeable and took care to treat the wheels like babies, computer balanced and torqued to the specs.

Mark said their warehouse had received 200 sets at the beginning of May, but so many were back ordered they were down to the last 20 sets, get 'em while you can.:burnout:
