The Mercedes 300 SLR from the 50s was loaded with unique features. What was the most unusual feature of the engine?

Its engine was made up of two 4 cylinder blocks. It was also the first fuel injected car.

It was based on the 1954 and 1955 Formula 1 W196 race car with an Inline 8.

They had desmodromic operated valves - and it was DOHC and yet had 2 valves per cylinder.

Here's what desmodromic is: http://www.usq.edu.au/users/grantd/motorcycle/ducati/DESMO.HTM

That's what I was looking for. Desmo valves are still very rare. Ducati uses them, but they are the only ones I know of.

It's a neat idea, I guess in that case our cars would have 8 cams...

I have seen one torn down recently (March). The car is a marvel of engineering. The engine/trans is a part of the chassis, somewhat like a tractor. It has the dual cam desmodromic valve system, very uniquely shaped pistons (look like a landslide), and direct injection from what I could tell. You have to step over the huge ledge to get in the car. If it is still apart next time I'm in Venice, I'll get some pictures of it. Very cool indeed!
