Time was getting short and Air Force One art director Carl Aldana was getting worried. He was supposed to have a Boeing 747 freshly painted and ready to perform its role as a double for the President's VC-25A, and the weather in Michigan was awful. American International Airways (AIA) had no facility where they could pull the airplane under cover, so it was parked out on the ramp awaiting paint.

After some fast telephone work, a company in Texas agreed to finish the paint job, and the airplane was flown to Amarillo with only days before shooting was schduled to start. Leading Edge Aviation Services put about a dozen people on the job around the clock, and while the new paint was curing, Aldana and his staff applied the large decals provided by the studio to complete the disguise.

When it was done, only the Air Force crew and those familiar with the special equipment aboard Air Force One could tell the copy from the real thing.
