Does anyone use a USB to Serial Port adapter? I am trying to hook my tuner up to my laptop. I guess it needs to recognize it as a COM port. Need help fast....:mad2:

Are you saying that your laptop doesn't have a serial port out in the back? I've not heard of a USB to serial adapter. Do you have a docking station for your laptop? That surely should have a serial port.

Brutus,

I use the Radio Shack "USB to Serial" adaptor #26-183 and it works just fine!!

Install the software via the CD and be sure that when you open the DiabloSport Downloader set the "COM1" in the upper left corner to "COM4" since the software designates the connection to "COM4" only!!

You should be fine then??

BTW, Dave told me that other brands of adaptors are hit and miss but the RS ones work very well!!:bows:

Good Luck!!

I do PCM flash programming as well as data logging and have the same issues. Some brands work fine with no problem and others just won't work. The Radio Shack adapters work poorly for my applications but since that particular s/w recognizes it, that would be the way to go (i.e. Go for what you know!). Make sure the software in the application is set to the corresponding com port designation. Also, certain anti-virus or adware programs may restrict I/O use and have to be configured, from their respective control panels, to allow access or port usage by the logging software.

Best luck,

J

You can also find USB port replicators that give you Serial, Parrallel, and PS2 ports if you so need them. Probably a bit more expensive but if you want all that stuff...

I'm happy that both my personal and work laptops have serial connections.

Sure I like USB, but I'm not quite ready to give up on legacy stuff just yet. :)

USB-Serial adapters should work OK, just make sure find out what the serial port number is ie. COM1, COM2, etc. One thing to remember when installing all USB devices, follow the manufacture's instruction. Usually you need to install the device driver(s) before pluggin in the USB device.

I had great luck with Hawking brand. Cheap, too.
