View Full Version : HD Radio
I don't know if this has been asked yet but...
I am thinking about upgrading to HD Radio. I don't want to toss my stock tuner. Is there an HD radio tuner that I can add to my system?
Best,
Dan
Wow. Did I actually stump the group?

Other than wide screen, what does HD radio get you in a noisy car?

To answer your question no....as of right now their is no "add-on" piece for digital radio unless you went with a RF modulator and got sirrus or xm. You will have to purchase a new headunit (aftermarket radio) that supports the HD digital signal. Kindly like all the new Tv's on the market their either HD ready (built in HD decoder) or an HD upgradable unit that will allow a HD tuner to be hooked up to it.

page 3 talks about the units and in the vehicle stuff.

I would assume eventually there would be standalone receivers that use the various inputs that satellite radios and iPods use. So, something may be available if not already.
Neat technology, going digital will really let the two bands make the most of their available bandwidth.
Can't wait for high-fidelity commercials.
;)
Still, cool tech, seems like a logical move for radio, but the estimate of 2016 for the switch seems kinda far and I wonder if the returns for HD Radio will be as good as that for HD TV - especially with regular radio having to compete with Satellite.
