OXNARD, Calif. - Two police officers patrolling the beach in an SUV on Monday ran over and killed a sunbather, authorities said.
The officers did not immediately realize they ran over the woman and continued driving, police Cmdr. Tom Chronister said in a statement.
The officers, who were not immediately identified, had stopped on a small berm of sand to watch a swimmer whom they believed to be in distress. When they saw the swimmer was fine, they drove over the berm and apparently over the woman's head, authorities said.
A witness called the Oxnard Fire Department to report the woman was bleeding on the beach just south of the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort. The woman, Cindy Conolly, 49, of Sioux City, Iowa, was in town for her son's wedding, said Mike Feiler, senior deputy medical examiner in the Ventura County coroner's office.
An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday. The officers have been placed on paid leave pending an investigation.
Oxnard is located about 55 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

The same way some woman could not hear a Harley right next to her window. :shake:

Edit Actually, after living in SFL for 4 years I have come to the conclusion that all the horrible senior drivers did not get that way because of their age. The majority have been like that their whole life. I see it all the time, people from 20-60, totally without a clue, whether it is the highway, rte 1, or the aisle in a grocery store or Home Depot. :)

There was a similar incedent in Miami a few years back. A police officer ran over a tourist on South Beach.

You'd be surprised what you can't here when you've got a set of earbuds in and cranked up so you can "ignore" the world.

There was a similar incedent in Miami a few years back. A police officer ran over a tourist on South Beach. There were over 5 incidents over the past 5 or 6 years, last year being the most recent. Sunbathers minding their own buisness one minute and dead the next. The last woman who was run over survived but her friend did not. She is still in the process of sueing the local PD after what happened to her...
Its sad and unfortunate.

Maybe she was sleeping or dozing off. :dunno: But in this case, I believe it is the responsibility of anyone driving on the beach to be extra cautious about kids, sunbathers, etc. Maybe her location was obscured by the berm .... whatever.

The investigation is on .... both officers will have to live with this regardless of how the thing comes out. The sad part is that she was visiting from Iowa for her son's wedding. Dayum shame. :(
