Challenge yourself here:

A Backhoe weighing 8 tons is on top of a flatbed trailer and heading east on
Interstate 70 near Hays, Kansas. The extended shovel arm is made of
hardened refined steel and the approaching overpass is made of
commercial-grade concrete, reinforced with 1 1/2 inch steel rebar spaced at
6 inch intervals in a crisscross pattern layered at 1 foot vertical spacing.

Solve: When the shovel arm hits the overpass, how fast do you have to be
going to slice the bridge in half? (Assume no effect for headwind and no
braking by the driver...)


Extra Credit: Solve for the time and distance required for the entire rig to
come to a complete stop after hitting the overpass at the speed calculated
above.


Answer - Who cares, the trucking company just bought themselves a bridge.

Since Trucking is the line of work Im in, Its a Rule that you NEVER load a machine with the bucket facing forward, The bucket is to always be at rest on the rear deck.
I wonder if the driver dropped the neck of the trailer or did it just snap off from the impact??.

So wait, the boom hit below the full edge of the bridge, and the force pushed it vertical which is how it punched through the pavement on top of the bridge, right?

Because while the boom is above the pavement on the bridge, the pictures show no damage to the stone gaurd rails on either side of the bridge.

This is a good thing, it means the trucking company didn't laod it with the boom vertical and expect the 30ft high boom to make it under a bridge. :)

Similiar incident happened here a few years ago...

New York State Thruway North.
Highway Repair crew repaving highway.
Dump truck loading asphault into paver was being pushed along highway
by paver as paver spreads asphault.
Dump Truck raised its tub to dump remaining asphault into paver.
During this time the Dump Truck / Paver approached a pedestrian bridge that crossed the Thruway.
Needless to say, NO ONE looked to see if the tub of the Dump Truck cleared the pedestrian bridge.
The tub lifted the pedestrian bridge off the foundation and carried it until someone realized what happened.
The Thruway was closed until a crane arrived to lift the bridge and place it back on its pedestals.

I remember back quite a few years ago when a Dump truck was heading down the Van Wyke here in NY and his Dump body lifted and took out a pedestrian bridge right near Jewel Ave.
I assume his PTO was engaged and the pressure built up to lift it.
