View Full Version : How Do I Get Rid Of A Gallon Of Dirty Gas?

Here is what happend. Went to start my riding mower yesterday, and found that the gas drained through the carb, down into the oil sump. Hydrolocked the engine and would not turn over. Once I saw what had happened, I drained out all the "oil" which is now about one quart of oil mixed with three quarts of gas. Now I have this gallon sitting here, and have no idea of how to get rid of it. Should I take it to Advance Auto and dump it in with their old used oil? No way will I dump in in my gas tank?

For those who wonder what did I do to fix the riding mower problem, after I drained the sump, I plugged the gas line, pulled the plug and engaged the started to pump all the crap out of the cylinder. Cleaned the plug. Installed an inline fuel shut off in the fuel line. Added a quart of fresh oil, installed the plug, cranked it over and after a few seconds, she started, but was smoking a lot and running rough. She started to run better the more I used it, and then went ahead and mowed the lawn. Was running great when I shut it down. Just to make sure all was OK, today I double checked the oil level, (had to add a little), then cranked it up and it started up faster than it has ever started in the past. While running, I soaped it down, and hosed off all the oil/gas mix that was pumped out yesterday. So, OK, the mower is fixed, but what do I do with that gallon of oil/gas mix?

This idea seemed to do the trick for this particularly insightful fellow...

If its only a gallon, maybe find a dirt area in the yard and dig a hole to dump it in. Then bury it and move on with life.

If the guys at Advanced Auto tend to be lazy, like at my local store, and let you dump the "oil" yourseff take it there and be done with it.
Must oil has a little combustion residue that can sometimes smell gas like, besides gas is a petrolium product just like oil.

Do you have any 2 cycle engines??? Feed it to them.

Just dump it at Advanced, or check to see if your town has a "Hazardous Wate Day". You can get rid of alot of stuff then.

If you use it in a 2-cycle you could damage the engine since you don't know the mixture.

If you dump it in your yard, even if the neighbors don't see you do it and report you, it will eventually end up in the water supply.

You could add it a neighbors gas tank... one you don't like :D

Auto parts stores take used "oil". I wouldn't offer that little story until you're on your way OUT of the place.

I like these ideas best, don't dump it on the ground...

He said he removed one plug, so he has a one cylinder engine that uses about 1 qt of oil (32 ounces) in order to have a greater then 25:1 ratio (which is a very conservative ratio for most 2 cycle engines) he would have to have more than 6 gallons of fuel flow into the crankcase, single cylinder riding lawn mowers do not have gas tanks that hold 6 gallons of fuel.

He could hurt the 2 cycle engine if the mixture has too little oil, otherwise the engine will smoke like hell and maybe foul out the plug at worse...:D

Now I have this gallon sitting here, and have no idea of how to get rid of it.

Our local dump has a "HAZMAT Week" about once a quarter. I get rid of my tranny fluid/coolant mix, extra paint, etc. Give them a call, they may have something similar there.
