Finally got the 428 together, only been 3 years!! I get some poping in the exhaust, not much else. Any good thoughts?? I'll get it sooner than later, hopefully some good ideas and I'll get it soon. Yes, fuel and spark are present.

sounds like the engine was not at Topdead center on the # 1 cylinder
with the Distributor pointing to the #1 cylinder..or the firing order is
way out..Its firing on the exhaus stroke...lift the dist out turnit 180
and drop it back in and try again..

Double check the firing order and spark plug wire configuration!! I had a 351W in my Cobra and it did much the same thing....eventually found out the previous builder put a 302W cam in it with a totally different firing order!!:mad2:
I don't know if that is possible with your 428 but it's worth a look!!

Just finished building one too, Is the engine ideling good and reving OK? If so are your cylinder heads new, rebuilt or used. What normally happens if your timing is correct is the valves are not seating good enough, and you get a pup pup pop type of sound out of the engine. If you have adjustable rockers double check them they can upset things too. Some times a car can run with the fireing order off but it will be so bad you will really notice it. PM me if you want. Good luck:D
I know 302 fords have a ccw firing order on the distributor.
Is the 428 the same?

it depends on the cap you buy, some do.

Yes, all FE engines spin the distrbutor CCW the same as the small-blocks.
(Which is also the same as the Clevelands and 385 series big-blocks.)
