While heading down a particularly long steep grade I thought I would put my car in nuetral and coast a little and save some fuel. About halfway down I glanced at my tach and noticed it was a 2500RPM. I did not expect that the ECU would alter the idle speed to meet the drivetrain speed for the eventual drop back into drive.

just fyi....youre wasting your time.....just leave it in drive....youre not going to save any measurable amount of fuel...and youre brakes will love you for it......

In fact, click off the O/D and let the engine hold you back. Your brakes will love you for it.

I have a manual transmission in my truck, and it does the same thing. Tries to keep engine RPM at drivetrain speed for high gear.
