Car wheels spin at different speeds, especially when turning. You can see from the animation below that each wheel travels a different distance through the turn, and that the inside wheels travel a shorter distance than the outside wheels. Since speed is equal to the distance traveled divided by the time it takes to go that distance, the wheels that travel a shorter distance travel at a lower speed. Also note that the front wheels travel a different distance than the rear wheels.
For the non-driven wheels on your car -- the front wheels on a rear-wheel drive car, the back wheels on a front-wheel drive car -- this is not an issue. There is no connection between them, so they spin independently. But the driven wheels are linked together so that a single engine and transmission can turn both wheels. If your car did not have a differential, the wheels would have to be locked together, forced to spin at the same speed. This would make turning difficult and hard on your car: For the car to be able to turn, one tire (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/tire.htm) would have to slip. With modern tires and concrete roads, a great deal of force is required to make a tire slip. That force would have to be transmitted through the axle from one wheel to another, putting a heavy strain on the axle components.
The differential is a device that splits the engine torque (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fpte3.htm) two ways, allowing each output to spin at a different speed.
The differential is found on all modern cars and trucks, and also in many all-wheel-drive (full-time four-wheel-drive (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/four-wheel-drive.htm)) vehicles. These all-wheel-drive vehicles need a differential between each set of drive wheels, and they need one between the front and the back wheels as well, because the front wheels travel a different distance through a turn than the rear wheels.
Part-time four-wheel-drive systems don't have a differential between the front and rear wheels; instead, they are locked together so that the front and rear wheels have to turn at the same average speed. This is why these vehicles are hard to turn on concrete when the four-wheel-drive system is engaged.
We will start with the simplest type of differential, called an open differential. First we'll need to explore some terminology: The image below labels the components of an open differential.
When a car is driving straight down the road, both drive wheels are spinning at the same speed. The input pinion is turning the ring gear and cage, and none of the pinions within the cage are rotating -- both side gears are effectively locked to the cage.
Note that the input pinion is a smaller gear than the ring gear; this is the last gear reduction in the car. You may have heard terms like rear axle ratio or final drive ratio. These refer to the gear ratio in the differential. If the final drive ratio is 4.10, then the ring gear has 4.10 times as many teeth as the input pinion gear. I haven't heard of the Ventures in ages. It's good to know younger people like them. Walk Don't Run is one they did great, and "Lets Go" Great Guitar music you just don't hear any more.

Actually there are a couple tunes on Ummagumma that have lyrics too. Namely track 5 "Grantchester Meadows" and possibly track 6 "several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict" but that's debatable...

The Ummagumma Live album has one tune without lyrics; "A saucerful of secrets". Good stuff. Pink Floyd, still first in space. :)

Quite an accomplished orchestra, and an important link to my personal maturity. A little later in my young life back then, I worked as a body guard for Van McCoy and M.F.S.B members as they toured the mid-west.

I'm temped to reveal my Van McCoy/Hugo Montegnegro/Henry Mancini musical roots, but I won't bother y'all with that now. My point is, there's a lot of different generes of music out there, from bagpipe bands to punks, to jungle drums, and spoons played on your knee, or, just rubbing rugs over the kitchen table. There's a trackable history, get in tune with it.

What ever gets you out of the chair and dancing like no one is watching, works for me. All of it is old, all of it is new. There are no "original concepts" anymore, today it seems "what ever makes money" and any "spin" you can add to it to move it all forward, is good.

The "art" of it all seems to have drifted away. Nothing is free anymore, nothing is given away for the beauty of the giving.

Completely agree with an earlier post. Last of the Mohicans is a great movie with an excellant soundtrack, even though there were some major cinematography screwups.

Some of their stuff is very Pink Floyd-ish but with their own creative juices mixed in, and very few of their tracks have any sort of lyrics. Sounds great with my Marauder's factory woofer!


Also I'd second Robert Myles and anything by Tiesto - although I'm among the younger crowd and can stomach the electronic stuff easily :D

I've had vinyl since I was a teenager dude. Before it started being cool again. ;)

I think I have more records than CDs... if you count 45s as a record. I need to take inventory someday. I bet I have 500 records or so.

I heard something a few weeks ago that the best sounding vinyl is actually the first three tracks on a 33. 45s will never sound as good because they are a thinner cut and when the needle get's closer to the center of a record (like the last 3 songs on a 33) the sound becomes slightly distorted. I've never noticed this, but a friend of mine wrote a ten page paper on this for a sound class... I guess he knows what he's talking about.
