Car wheels spin at different speeds, especially when turning. You can see from the animation below that each wheel travels a different distance through the turn, and that the inside wheels travel a shorter distance than the outside wheels. Since speed is equal to the distance traveled divided by the time it takes to go that distance, the wheels that travel a shorter distance travel at a lower speed. Also note that the front wheels travel a different distance than the rear wheels.
For the non-driven wheels on your car -- the front wheels on a rear-wheel drive car, the back wheels on a front-wheel drive car -- this is not an issue. There is no connection between them, so they spin independently. But the driven wheels are linked together so that a single engine and transmission can turn both wheels. If your car did not have a differential, the wheels would have to be locked together, forced to spin at the same speed. This would make turning difficult and hard on your car: For the car to be able to turn, one tire (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/tire.htm) would have to slip. With modern tires and concrete roads, a great deal of force is required to make a tire slip. That force would have to be transmitted through the axle from one wheel to another, putting a heavy strain on the axle components.
The differential is a device that splits the engine torque (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fpte3.htm) two ways, allowing each output to spin at a different speed.
The differential is found on all modern cars and trucks, and also in many all-wheel-drive (full-time four-wheel-drive (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/four-wheel-drive.htm)) vehicles. These all-wheel-drive vehicles need a differential between each set of drive wheels, and they need one between the front and the back wheels as well, because the front wheels travel a different distance through a turn than the rear wheels.
Part-time four-wheel-drive systems don't have a differential between the front and rear wheels; instead, they are locked together so that the front and rear wheels have to turn at the same average speed. This is why these vehicles are hard to turn on concrete when the four-wheel-drive system is engaged.
We will start with the simplest type of differential, called an open differential. First we'll need to explore some terminology: The image below labels the components of an open differential.
When a car is driving straight down the road, both drive wheels are spinning at the same speed. The input pinion is turning the ring gear and cage, and none of the pinions within the cage are rotating -- both side gears are effectively locked to the cage.
Note that the input pinion is a smaller gear than the ring gear; this is the last gear reduction in the car. You may have heard terms like rear axle ratio or final drive ratio. These refer to the gear ratio in the differential. If the final drive ratio is 4.10, then the ring gear has 4.10 times as many teeth as the input pinion gear. See How Gears Work (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/gears.htm) for more information on gear ratios.
When a car makes a turn, the wheels must spin at different speeds.
In the figure above, you can see that the pinions in the cage start to spin as the car begins to turn, allowing the wheels to move at different speeds. The inside wheel spins slower than the cage, while the outside wheel spins faster. <!-- Page Break -->

Actually, there are words to Sleep Walk, but the instrumental versions are vastly more popular.

My favorite instrumentals? "Bullwinkle Pt. 2" by the Centurions and "Green Onions" by Booker T & the M.G.s

Awsome song, but since it has these words "One of these days, I'm going to cut you into little pieces" right in the middle, it's out.

But "Great Gig In The Sky" is awsome. I dont know if it is the best or not, but that what I can think of off the top of my head.

Satriani Rocks, and there's another of his on the same album: Always With Me Always With You.

Rush also has a couple of great cuts; one where Neil Peart follows Geddy note for note. Moving Pictures, perhaps?

"Hocus Pocus" by Focus.

"Super Strut" by Deodato.
(everyone is probably like WhoTF is that ?).

Too many others to list right now.

Much of it is jazz my father got me into as a teen. Not that YAAAAAWWWWWWNNNNNN elevator type stuff ..... most of this stuff I really like actually jams.

Super Strut is a good example of the sort of sound(s) I really like.

Not really sure what genre the majority of the jazz I like, is really considered.

Jazz fusion, acid jazz ?.

:dunno:

I could really use some one fairly seasoned in life(older) that knows a lot about this stuff(jazz).

I've got a bunch of jazz on home made cassettes(made from LP's) that I really love ..... but I have NOOOOOOOOOOOOO idea on the artists of quite a few. My father didn't label much of the stuff he recorded onto cassette & some of the ones I did, came from his un-labeled cassettes.

Percy Faith did his own remake of "A Summer Place" and rocked it a bit himself. Very nice.

After that, it's "Machines" by Gorgio Moroder, soundtrack to "Metropolis-'84"

After that, "Zero to Sixty in Five" by Pablo Cruise.

Of course there are hundreds more, but these three had me making loops from vinyl to cassette tapes for the car, and I could remember them without looking anything up.

Actually there are a couple tunes on Ummagumma that have lyrics too. Namely track 5 "Grantchester Meadows" and possibly track 6 "several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict" but that's debatable...

The Ummagumma Live album has one tune without lyrics; "A saucerful of secrets". Good stuff. Pink Floyd, still first in space. :)

As I recall, the initials stood for Mother, Father, Sister, Brother. I remember the name; but can't place any songs. :DIndeed you are correct on the decypher, the band did come to recognize their roots in later years.

Most famous (i.e. popular) were their instrumential renditions (covers) of "Freddie's Dead, BackStabbers, Poinciana, Zack's Fanfare, Cheaper to Keep Her, TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia, later the soundtrack for the TV version of Dick Clark's American Bandstand, "Soul Train"), Touch Me In the Morning (Diana Ross?), Love Has No Time or Place, K-Jee, The Zip, Picnic in the Park (based on 1800's French art donchakno, go figure?), and We've Got the Time". Kenny Gamble and Jimmy Huff, where are you today?:

M.F.S.B.'s pinnacle tunes are a toss-up between "Philadelphia Freedom" by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, and a very tasteful and highly moving cover of "Summertime" from Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess".

Quite an accomplished orchestra, and an important link to my personal maturity. A little later in my young life back then, I worked as a body guard for Van McCoy and M.F.S.B members as they toured the mid-west.

I'm temped to reveal my Van McCoy/Hugo Montegnegro/Henry Mancini musical roots, but I won't bother y'all with that now. My point is, there's a lot of different generes of music out there, from bagpipe bands to punks, to jungle drums, and spoons played on your knee, or, just rubbing rugs over the kitchen table. There's a trackable history, get in tune with it.

What ever gets you out of the chair and dancing like no one is watching, works for me. All of it is old, all of it is new. There are no "original concepts" anymore, today it seems "what ever makes money" and any "spin" you can add to it to move it all forward, is good.

The "art" of it all seems to have drifted away. Nothing is free anymore, nothing is given away for the beauty of the giving.

Sad...

Thanks for the lesson, Mac. Now I remember Philadelphia Freedom, Summertime, and TSOP. Also remember Van McCoy and "The Hustle". I thought I was the only one here who ever did stuff like that. I do that at my place. I don't use headphones though. I'll sit alone in the dark and just put on some vinyl, usually let the red neon light in my place be my only light. It's a really nice feeling.

That's also why I'm constantly listening/blasting music in the car. Just to forget about the world for a little while.

Speaking of Peter Gun I like this version the most. Something about a twangy guitar that slides. I really enjoy music more than anything, even sex. The record player doesn't play games and always makes you feel better.

Scat vocal eh? Sounds like that one guy singing in Spanish from a few months ago that couldn't sing. I think he was trying to do the songs you just posted! haha

You really are one weird little eunuch aren't you?

I've learned most people that are heavily into music and perform it also think this way. In reality we are all nerds. Being that we'd rather practice for a show the next day than go out with the girlfriend. If we can finish in time, maybe we'll have time to "Rock". Usually not though.

I can't do it, I lose my focus. I'll end up listening to the music over whoever I'm with. I think it's rude too towards the musician even if they can't see you. I don't know why. I've always felt that way. If I wanna annoy her or get her outta bed I just play this song... LOUD!

Sorry it has vocals.

Honky Tonk Parts 1 and 2, Bill Dogget, especially part 1.

Quiet Village, Martin Denny (sic)

Because They're Young, Duane Eddy

Completely agree with an earlier post. Last of the Mohicans is a great movie with an excellant soundtrack, even though there were some major cinematography screwups.

Last seven or so minutes of the movie are awesome.

I have em all on 45s. ;)

Telestar by The Tornados was the first number one hit single in the U.S.A. that was from the U.K. 1961 was the year. Strange song to me, kinda scary almost... I guess the name The Tornados does it.

I really need to get home to listen to Rumble by Link Wray.

Ever heard the version with lyrics?

Did you know that Duane Eddy song was actually meant to be a theme song to a talk show? Hear where they ripped off a riff to make Jeroperdy?

I need to get a life.

I read the whole thread and didn't see a SINGLE metion of Tangerine Dream. Tsk tsk!

Some of their stuff is very Pink Floyd-ish but with their own creative juices mixed in, and very few of their tracks have any sort of lyrics. Sounds great with my Marauder's factory woofer!

Also I'd second Robert Myles and anything by Tiesto - although I'm among the younger crowd and can stomach the electronic stuff easily :D

I hear Walk, Don't Run, and I'm back to June 1960, driving my two tone blue , 55 Ford convert (with Hollywood mufflers, and gold musical notes painted on the radio speaker).

Car cost me a whopping $425. Nothing worked right, but who cared?

I envy you. BTW that song isn't by The Ventures. It's actually from 1956 and it sounds nothing like a Surf song. I forgot who it's by though... sorry.

Anyone else surprised by the 20-something's choices here? Rush? The Ventures? The 1 dude (Motorhead 350) even referred to owning vinyl...at 24!?!

I guess if you are into MM's, or "the old man's car" as my wife called it, and not Mustangs, Hondas, etc, you're already showing that you have a mind of your own. I'm being schooled.

I've had vinyl since I was a teenager dude. Before it started being cool again. ;)

I think I have more records than CDs... if you count 45s as a record. I need to take inventory someday. I bet I have 500 records or so.

I heard something a few weeks ago that the best sounding vinyl is actually the first three tracks on a 33. 45s will never sound as good because they are a thinner cut and when the needle get's closer to the center of a record (like the last 3 songs on a 33) the sound becomes slightly distorted. I've never noticed this, but a friend of mine wrote a ten page paper on this for a sound class... I guess he knows what he's talking about.
