With a couple of peoples comments about small electrical or engine fars and having know a couple to have the same issue with their other, non-MM cars, anyone have a good recommendation for a nice fire extenguisher for the car? And a good place to mount?
I have seen a couple with nice chrome exterior and good looking mounting brackets. That sounds good to me, but I have not checked prices (mostly cause I see them posted in my Porsche magazine and assume they aren't cheap). Having handy inside the car would be nice, but don't want it to get in the way. A nice mounting spot in the trunk would be cool, but how accessable? Then again, if it was an engine fire I would be out of the car anyway.
Anyone have one in their car? What are you using? Which chemical is best for car use? Any pictures of mounting?

I have a small stainless steel Halon extinguisher, mounted in the trunk. It's basically a one-shot deal like most small extinguishers. I put it to use last week and was quite happy that I had it. I'll be getting a replacement soon and I'll post pics of the mounting position in the next couple of days if you're interested.

I would be very interested in the pictures. Is it not refillable or just a cheap to buy a replacement? Where did you get it?

Interesting Thread. I have had the same thoughts of a small Fire Extinguisher.

Mac made a great suggestion here the other day for mounting it (extinguisher) in the trunk---- take a 1/2 inch sheet of plywood --about sized 12-15 inch by same size--and paint it to match your interior trunk--mark and mount the extinguisher holder onto the wood to the far left side leaving the right side open and clear---place this clear part under the spare tire and tighten =---Holds all in place without making any holes in the truck-perfect---

Mine. ;)
Honestly...I wish I had put it on the other side. I have occationally bumped my head, and more so when wearing a race helmet.
This FE is basically for asthetics. It would serve little purpose in a large blaze.

What size fire extinguisher will put out an underhood fire?
I had an underhood fire in a MKIV and the fire exting in the emergency kit only spread the flames. Some young guns in a p/u with a large extinguisher put it right out.

My experience with car fires says a mediocre extinguisher that you can put your hands on in 10 seconds beats a good one that you need 60 seconds to get. Cars are so rich with fuel for the fire that the flames grow by leaps and bounds.
I keep a "$20 got it at Home Depot" all-purpose/garage use fire ex in all my cars. I really like the plywood - paint it black idea. Mine is mounted in the right rear corner of the trunk since the CD is in the left rear, but if I were doing it again I'd do the plywood.
