Gents,

I reviewed previous posts about this topic and have decided on using Mobile One. Could I hear the recommended weights? I was told that the newer engines like 5W-30. My plan is to run 1000 miles on the factory oil then replace it with Mobile One and run it till 5000 total miles then replace it every 5000 miles.

Do you agree or disagree with the 5000-mile interval for normal driving oil changes.

Finally, what oil filters do you all recommend? Fram, Motorcraft, Amsoil etc.

Thanks in advance,

just my 2 cents
drove mine til 1000 miles, then had dealer change oil, went with mobil one 5w30. I buy oil [sam,s club $23/6 qts] dealer uses motorcraft filter we both agree 3000 miles for changes, 1st year free[part of deal to get one on the road] by the way dealer parts and service have been very helpful. sales another story, re: lack of knowledge about cars. directed them to this site, very impressed! THANKS LOGAN and everyone else!!

I, too, went with 5w30 weight Mobil 1 synthetic. I'm also using the Mobil 1 oil fitler. I don't know that it makes any difference, but I figured it was designed with their oil in mind, so why not?

I changed the factory fill at 1500 miles and when I hit 3000 I'll change again. I plan to maintain a 3000 mile oil change interval, but I think that with a high quality synthetic like this you could easily do it every 5000 and be just fine.

Why do I do it every 3000, then? Simply because I've always felt better over maintaining a vehicle. Sure, it costs more but it buys me piece of mind. Also, the one thing I've found over the years that keeps engines running like new is regular oil changes.

Just my $0.02.

Some manufacturer's put a special break in oil with additives in it from the factory and they recommend that the oil stay in the car for the first 3000 miles.
Does Mercury do this?
Do any of you guys change your oil every 3 months even if it has not been driven 3000 miles?
I know a lot of these cars will be sitting in garages and will not be driven a lot.

Hi everyone,

I am getting conflicting reports on which oil is the better of the two, and also what is REALLY recommended for a first oil change, as I am nearing 1800 miles and would like to do an oil change soon!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Marsha,

There are advantages to both the regular oils and the synthetics. If you do oil / filter changes every 3000 miles, the heavy duty schedule, regular oil will work fine. I personally use regular oil in my daily drivers that get a lot of nasty stop and go in Atlanta traffic. My 72 LTD sees less than 4k a year, and sits a whole lot, so I converted it to Mobil 1 when I bought it.

If you decide you want to go to synthetics you can change your mind at oil change number 2 without a problem. Meanwhile you can check out both stories and decide how you want to proceed.. both are good choices as long as you follow the maintenace intervals in your manual..

Thank you so much for your input. I will be putting the car away for the NH winter, and will use regular oil and then again in the spring have it changed when we get back from FL and then like you said consider which synthetic to use.
Thanks again.
Marsha:)

Since Mercury recommends Motorcraft blended synthetic 5W20 why not use it? I do. If the time ever comes when you have an engine warranty claim and need to show oil change frequency, source, type etc...using the factory choice may be helpful.

The Mercury product specialist who answered questions in the Edmunds chatroom specifically downplayed the need to use full synthetic oil in the MM. In fact if I remember right he said not to use it. If anyone read him differently let us know.

Piglet, I have always used nothing but FRAM filters... I drove my first new car 221,000 miles and sold it to a friend...the Thunderbird SC I just replaced has 152,000 on it...neither car had any major engine problems, so I say don't fix it if it ain't broke. I'm sure the Motorcraft aftermarket filters are also good; Ford isn't likely to sell you a crap filter.

I'm looking at a combo of mobil 1 15W50 and fram for my next change in Vic. Since almost every trip more then 5mi north on 121 turns into a vette race...
