By now, most everyone has heard about the pipeline in Alaska. :(

This morning on the NBC "Today Show", they interviewed the President and CEO of British Petroleum (BP). He says that bacteria are causing the corrosion problem and eating away the pipe carrying the oil. This is the first that I heard of aluminum, steel, stainless steel eating bacteria. I always thought that corrosion was a "Chemical" reaction not an organic one. I am sure that there's a reasonable explanation for the corrosion ..... but bacteria ...... eating the pipe. I gotta get me one of those CEO jobs. ;)

Seems that BP has been spending about 1/4 cent for each dollar of profit on maintenance and corrosion prevention.

I used to be worried about West Nile virus .... now pipe eating bacteria. What's next???

Perhaps BP might consider a sacrificial anode solution.
It's a start.

Yup, but all we can do is pay the price... literally. I know I'm not letting anything get in the way of my driving, so if it costs me 50 bucks to fill the Marauder so be it. You don't wanna know what my truck costs! :cheesed:

they knew this would happen.....just another way to jack price.....there is no way an oil giant doesnt know the ramifications of not keeping up on maintenance.......

OK \/\/\/\/\/\/ this I understand. It's still chemical corrosion caused by the generation of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) and subsequent Sulfuric acid (H2SO4). Thanks for the info. I learned something new again today. Seems like the rate of corrosion up in Alaska would be very low due to the low temps. Maybe BP underestimated that rate. Surprise, surprise ....... :o

FACT OR MYTH?
“Small animals eating steel” is a myth. It is however a fact that local
corrosion, occurring at very high rates and typically looking like clusters
of pits, can be caused by chemical processes initiated by bacterial
activity, i.e. bacterial corrosion exists.
This phenomenon is sometimes described as “microbial corrosion”
indicating that types of microbes other than bacteria may be involved
in the process. The accepted technical term is “microbially influenced
corrosion”.
Bacterial corrosion most frequently occurs on cargo oil tank bottom
plating. It occurs also in water ballast tanks, primarily on up-facing,
horizontal surfaces.

Hell.... I just filled up w/ Sunoco 94 last night for $53.

I doubt it will ever cost less to fill up the MM. :depress:

What's worse is that 90% of Alaska's income .. to the tune of about $6.5 Million per day comes from oil. This is gonna devastate the economy in Alaska. :mad2:
