What was your first car?? I'm not talking about the first car you drove. I mean the first car you could call your own.

Mine was a 65' Mustang....It was a pile, It was a primer burgundy and leaked oil like a mother...Seemed to me that I only got like 9 or 10 miles to the gallon in it too, and the interior was shot. Later I sold it for a very nice price to a guy who said he wanted to restore it. He told me it was actually a 64 1/2 mustang (still to this day don't know what that means) But he wanted it real bad.

1965 Mustang coupe 289 with a 4 speed in 1968. Ford made some changes around August of 1965 to the Mustang so the ones built before are referred to as 19641/2 in the mustang hobby. All are titled as 1965 models.

1962 MGA, new POS. My first clue that the gals in my area didn't know what a real chick magnet was. Fun in summer, PIA big time in Maine winters. didn't last long...but a slow learner here. Later in life bought a beautiful MGTD. Wish I still had that one. Dennis:)

When I was 15, I bought a 1974 Malibu Laguna for $250.00 that ran and drove. It needed tires and an exhaust. The gas in the tank was rank so my Dad followed me home on back roads with a plastic boat gas tank and I had to keep pumping the bulb to keep the carb full. The car was anti-glare blue and wouldn't even shine when it was wet. It was a straight-6 and automatic and had NO options. No radio, A/C, or power goodies. The rubber around the door glass was so dry-rotted that rain came in even with the windows up. I drove it to school and work until a lady in a Chevy Celebrity made a left in front of me. I put house carpet in it and a radio that smoked.

First owned a 1958 Ford 4 door. Couldn't get enough bondo into it to pass safety inspection, so my dad gave it away for parts. Firdt legal ride was a 1974 Plymoth Duster. 198 c.i. slant six, 3 on the floor, wide tires on the back, I put this car through hell. Blew 2 clutches, hit several objects, got it stuck in the woods. Finally, after 158K miles, I blew a hole in the side of the block that a softball fit in. Sold it for $75, crumpled fenders, body rot, bent frame and all.

Does your first car have to run? If not then mine was a 1931Pontiac sedan.
towed it home and put it in our coral. There it sat for over a year. Sold it for
50 bucks. Went out and bought a 37 dodge 4 door. That too went into the coral. But this one ran. Taught myself how to shift, use the gas and brake.
All was fine till I ran thru the coral fence. First street car was a 54 buick special. Nice car.

My first car was a graduation gift before graduation...a hand me down 72 (I think) Volvo 244, 4 door. Dark Tan/Yellow and in very nice shape for its age, this was in '83. Of course I really liked the car but foolish kid that I was I totaled it while taking an unauthorized day off from school :shake: Dad was NOT happy!

I was on my own after that fiasco so I bought a 72 Galaxie 500, 2 door, 351 auto, drove it into the ground and moved on to many other Galaxies from there...I wish I still had the 68 XL Ragtop........

Got a hand me down 1964 Saab 95 (or 96, i forget which was which) coupe. It had a little pep...only it HAD A TWO CYCLE ENGINE, had to add a can of 2 cycle oil to the gas tank at every fill up, which got a little old. Ran that one into the ground and "upgraded" to a 69 VW super beetle.

'74 Chevy Caprice Classic 2dr.

I was riding bike home from my part time, after school job bagging groceries when I seen it. I asked how much he wanted. 100 bucks was the reply. He told me it had a really big motor and that I wouldn't like the gas milage.

We popped the hood and there it was, a factory 454! I offered him $50 and he accepted it.

The next day my Dad and I got a log chain and pulled it out of his yard. I put two used tires on it, a battery, and 4 quarts of oil.

That thing would burn the tires as long as I held the loud peddle down, got 6mpg and burned a quart every 200 miles. In four months I racked up 2000 miles and lost my licence in two states. (3 speeding tickets, 6 "fix it" tickets, 2 exhibition tickets iirc).

Sold it for $500 to a guy in Iowa who needed the mill for his '55 Chevy.

The summer wherein I first became a licensed driver, I drove a 1963 Mercury 4 door (the one with the odd back window) from Chicago to San Diego. A neighbor was moving and needed the car transported. It was a great drive along the old Rt. 66, and I've been in love with that drive (and driving cross-country) ever since.

I didn't get paid for this, just food and transportation home. But, when I got home (via airplane), waiting for me was my first car, a used and abused 1964 Pontiac GTO, burgandy with black bucket seat interior. 389, single Carter quad, 4 speed, and 3:08 open gear.

It was a wreck mechanically, but sweet, precious at the same time. I still remember the license plate...KKK 444, and I had a lot of fun rebuilding the engine and tranny. Only option was an AM radio with a Motorola "reverb" box that "boing-ed" when I went over bumps and RR tracks.

As it is always the case, I wish I had that car today.

I got my license when I was 16 and bought my first car when I was 17. I paid $1,000.00. It had been sitting for a year before I bought it. It was a flat white, with no clear coat and black rubber bumpers. 2 door '86 nissan sentra. 4 cyl. 1.6 litre 1595cc. light brown vinal interior, 5 spd. I had it for about 3 months then shot a rod thru the the oil pan. Not a pretty sight. paid about $550.00 for a rebuilt lower half of the engine. Ok car all in all.....dont want that one back though. Had it for about 2 years before and electrical problem sealed it fate....sold it for $500.00.

Jan/1960; purchased a 1953 Ford 4 dr, flathead V8, 3 speed column shift.

Compression was so bad that the car would roll down hill with the trans in 1st gear, motor and handbrake off. But, you could not hear the motor when running, it was so quiet.

Paid $250; sold it in June 1960 for $275, and bought a 1955 Ford two-tone blue convertible for $430.

Been a convertible lover ever since.

1964 Chevrolet Impala with a 327 4bb. auto, air etc.. in great condition when I bought it. I eventually trashed the car (wrecks, racing). It was huge and substituted as the local motel for me on weekends. It was just as you describe, the swing arms had holes clean through. The rust is a problem. Even now you need to be careful when looking for one of these cars. In fact I had a 66 500 Hardtop Cp that apparently had rails so rusted they finally gave up the ghost one night. I had sold the car some time before this occurred but the guy told me the whole rear end came out and was sitting in the road behind him, this was around 1989 I think....bad stuff.

My 64 Galaxie's frame is rusted out (side rails). Noticed it back in the late 80's after I did a cosmetic restoration and a conversion from a Galaxie 500 to a 500XL.

When I was in Junior High my dad found a '52 ford 2-dr sedan with that old flathead V-8. He drove the snot out of it until he decided one day to park it. It sat long enough that he decided to drain the fluids out...of course we went on vacation and my older sister took it out and promptly liberated that flathead of any compression...
I got it when I was late in the sophomore year, maybe it was summer?
I got some support from dad and set a (keep the jabs to a minimum here...) Chevy 350 bored .60 over and slapped a race prepped TH350. The rear was a stump-pulling set at 5.11/1 Dad got me a cam for it that was so aggressive it would not idle when outside temps were below 70F and when the thing left (many times while I had it) the intersection on green, it wouldn't stop spinning them until I got back off the gas.
OH MAN this thing was SUHWEEET!!! White naugahide (sp?) tuck and roll with black piping, dual exhaust and best of all...stoner gray primer (until I got that redish/rusty colored primer and sprayed it on out front in the gravel.

It was too much of a beast to drive girls around in all the time so I picked up a 77 cutlass supreme brogham (sp?) Snow white and red cloth interior...AWESOME back seat!!!

Yep...a fire breathing giant that I built and a slick ride...so when I joined the Navy and headed off to boot camp...which one did i take?
Dad sold those two and I got my sisters 82-ish Ford EXP...what a POS!!

oh well, I have my marauders now!!!

1970 MERCURY CYCLONE SPOILER 429 CJ ... My family moved from Troy Mi in 1977 to Birmingham Al and the guy up the street had a MINT spoiler for sale. I was seventeen and hated B'ham so I ran away back up to Detroit and street reced Woodward Ave all summer....Oh the memories... My parents talked me into going back to Ala to finish H.S. I did and when I got back they grabbed the keys and had me locked up in juvinile detention. The Cyclone sat for a very long time before I drove it again...True Story!!!

'53 chevy 2-door sedan w/3 on the tree. I had to be careful where I put small items. Sometimes things would fall through the rusted out areas in the floorboard. Other than that, it was a reasonably decent car for $225 back in 1962.
