View Full Version : No V-8 for Lincoln flagship?

Got this from todays Orlando Sentinel:
Ford has killed plans to put a V-8 engine in its future Lincoln MKS flagship sedan, says Automotive News. The 4.4 liter V-8, a version of a Yamaha engine used in the Volvo XC90 crossover, was slated to power the MKS beginning in 2008. Ford planned to produce the V-8 at its Lima, Ohio, plant. But in recent days, the company has canceled the program, supplier and industry sources say.
"Lower-volume engine production is always higher cost," said Eric Fedewa, a powertrain analyst with CSM Worldwide in Northville, Mich. Ford had planned to use the V-8 in other future products, including crossovers for the Ford and Lincoln brands. Annual engine volume was expected to approach 100,000.
Ford now will rely solely on its new 3.5 liter V-6 engine family to power the MKS, sources said. Ford's other V-8s are too large. The decision could prove to be a competitive challenge in a segment where most rivals offer a V-8.
The 3.5 liter V-6 is being added to the Ford FiveHundred and Mercury Montego sedans, which share a platform with the MKS. Lincoln's smaller MKZ sedan also is using the 3.5 liter V-6 beginning this fall.
To set the bigger sedan apart, Ford will boost the output of the base V-6 for the MKS, sources said, probably to 260 horsepower.

Just know you're driving one of the last great Ford V8's we'll see for a while.
Think gas prices and mpg are a factor in the decision?

It looks that beans counters are taking the lead up there !
These guys already killed a couple of companies by removing the idea of "passion" from their product. Unfortunately, I do not see a lot of passion left in a range of cars leaded by a V6 Five Hundred. By cancelling the availability for a V8 at Lincoln's, it is sure that they will not have any "locomotive" any more to leave the clients dreaming and to make the other V6 and whatever else sold. But I heard something about a coming V8 "Hurricane" engine...is it that one that is trashed ?

Don't know how they can virtually walk away from the livery service biz as well as the LEO biz...
Meanwhile...remember....dealer s are getting $15 - $20K OVER sticker right now for a Supercharged 5.4L in the GT-500. Yeah...no $ to be made there....:rolleyes:

If Lincoln is planning on building their "flagship" on the same basic structure as a Montego, I would not recommend buying any Lincoln stock.

How can you have a 'flagship' luxury car with only a V6 under the hood. Is Ford changing the market they want the Lincoln to compete in? Because, whether they like it or not, they have done exactly that. Every other car in that segment will have a V8. Bye bye Lincoln's market share!

You would think with the high volume of sales in these lines why walk away? Well Chevy did in '96. So did Dodge.

I can see it now:
"FORD has difficulties moving new top of the line Lincolns..."
Hmmmmm, :hmmm:...Let's see: A 3.5 Liter V6 with a whomping 260HP/ Automatic transmission vs. A 6.0 Liter V8 with 400HP / 6 speed transmission...(Cadillac CTS-V)
JEEZ...Why doesn't FORD just go ahead and BURY Lincoln, Mercury, and Jaguar and make only Mustangs and F150s.
Hell, according to the bean counters those are the only products making any money!:mad2:
**** IDIOTS!...Can't wait for the car company I hate most...HONDA, to buy FORD and make my miserable FORD stock worth something!

What was the deal over at Chrysler during the early Iacocca years? I remember a government loan/bail-out followed by a couple of generations of uninspiring, performance lacking, inspirationless K cars. Yuck.
Fast forward 20 years, though it may have taken a German infusion, they have cars that, even if you don't like the looks, are hot V-8's driving the rear wheels and selling the hell out of them.
So, hey... let's give Ford 20 years and let's see what happens.
Oh... and Acura's RL, their 'flagship', V6. For now...

Wouldn't it be cool (and flat out amazing) if FORD actually had the balls to put V-12s back into the Lincolns and Jaguars??
Talk about 'cache' for their top of the line models!
Heck, they make that all aluminum V-12 for the Aston Martin...

BDJ is correct. I have found several at MSRP and I received an email from a dealer tonight looking for an offer under sticker for one. May not be the next Marauder scenario but could be...No one seems to be that impressed with the fit and finish or the performance at that price point. Dennis:cool: <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Again Dennis that is the point or problem? They are selling the GT-500 via a name from the past. Stock Mustang GT with the 3-V engine V-8 will nip at its heels. Spend some money and out run it for less.
Ford needs to get back to it's core. CARS! Fun cars, fast cars, cars with high MPG's and no more wrong wheel driver!:mad:

At msrp, and below, it isn't bad, at what some dealers are trying to sell it for, it's insane crazy.
Dealers are Fords, the car, and thier own, worst enemy.
They did it to the Marauder as well.

I'm guessing here, but the only other car in this class with a V6 that I can think of is the Acura RL.
Also, some Benz's still offer V6s in the lower classes.

My solution for Lincoln/Mercury:
Keep the Towncar and offer an option to stick the GT-500 motor in it, and all the Marauder suspension stuff;
Develop a state of the art RWD big platform, make it good looking and exclusive; something like the STS-V series (maybe use the body from that "fourty-nine" showcar";
Keep the Grand Marquis but add a new Marauder option exactly like an 04 with the blower (its all off the shelf);
Kill the Milan and Montego, replace with "Mercury Cyclone" which would be a US built version of the Aussie Ford Falcon (and make a wagon version);
Build the European Escort here and call it a "Comet" or "Capri";
Keep the smallest SUV and the Navigator, dump the rest;
Kill the pickup;
and most importantly, tell dealers the first one that takes a new car and adds all that fake convertible top/brass snaps/gold emblems crap loses his franchise.
If I was King of the Forest....

Put a S/C on the LT from the factory and sell it with B*ll's.
Really spend some time and effort trainning your dealers how to sell these new models, not the bs we heard when most of went to get marauder. Would like the "GT" version of the Grand Marquis...:rofl:
