View Full Version : Mad Max 2006
Power Surge

Hey all. Sal here from Power Surge Performance. Some of you may know me and some of you may not. I've got a few customers here on this site, who speak highly of it. And when I asked what a good site was for CVs and GMs, they said there's lot of non-Marauder guys here, so here I am.
My daily driver is a retired 2000 CHP Police Interceptor. Since the mad scientist in me can't leave anything alone, and since I usually have lots of spare stuff laying around the shop, I embarked on a neat project that I call "MadMax 2006".
The pics below should speak for themselves, but basically it's a built 5.4 Lightning motor with heads/cams, and a Whipple pullied for 20 psi. Yes, it's insane, but that's the fun of the car. Questions are welcome, hope everyone likes it :).

Hey Sal, Its about time you jumped on board! Sal has personally tuned my Marauder and told me about his idea to do this a month ago when I was last at his shop.
Im sure a few members will chime in and brag about how great a tuner Sal is.

I LOVE IT!....even the ricers would recognize a big blower poking through the hood!!!!
For the total MAD MAX effect all that you need is a selenoid control on the shifter to turn the blower drive ON & OFF.
Nice work and welcome aboard!

Thanks for the welcome guys.
Here's some more info, I'll try to address all the questions...
It's a 5.4 Lightning motor. Built short block, stock heads, Comp cams. Lightning manifold, Lightning Whipple blower kit, pullied for 20 psi. Air to water intercooled, using the stock Lightning heat exchanger behind the bumper. Running the stock Lightning manifolds for now (they flow pretty good actually); maybe I'll build some custom headers for it over the winter. Coming off the manifolds it has 2.5" pipe going to Bassani mufflers. It ends there for now. Will be going back to the exhaust shop in 3 weeks for the tailpipes (mandrel machine is not setup for 2.5 right now). I will be putting a second set of mufflers, bullet style, under the quarter panels to quiet the car back down. Stock Lightning MAF, with MAFia extender, 60lb injectors, twin 255s in the tank. Running the stock CV PCM, with my tuning of course. SFI PA flywheel, used to convert to the 4 bolt convertor pattern (stock Lightning is 6 bolt). The rest of the car is the stock, 155k mile Interceptor. That includes the trans. It will proabably blow up if I put a tire on the car. When that happens, I think I am going to put in an 04 Marauder or 04-05 F-150 trans, as per Jerry W's suggestion. The rear is the stocker, with the Watts link, with 3.55 traction lock, added by the previous owner.
That's the specs, if someone wants something more specific, just ask.
Awesome!
Kenne Bells fit under the hood though....
This isn't a 4.6 though.
MMmmmmmm :lovies2: What sort of numbers are you getting?
No numbers yet. I don't want to dyno it until the exhaust is 100% done. It should put about 550 to the wheels.
Nice! :bows:Any traction problems?:bows:
You could say that :D. It blows the tires off pretty much till I let off. And that's at about 1/4 throttle.
Nice car, Sal! Daily driver?
Yeah, lol. I need to seal the hood somehow though, before it sees rain.
Sal - Welcome aboard.:D Are you located on Long Island?
Yes, my shop is in Port Jeff.
So the 5.4 DOES fit......
How? :)
It wasn't too bad. It definitely wasn't a drop in, but it wasn't bad at all. Using the Lightning manifolds, the pass side fit right in, and on the drivers side I had to cut a small section out of the casting and weld a plate on to clear the steering shaft. If I had used the stock 4.6 manifolds it would have cleared, but they suck for flow. I had to move the wiper motor up in the cowl mount all the way, and then section a small piece out of it to clear the stock Lightning fuel rails. But the top cover fit back on, so it looks stock. The truck pan fits the frame, but it hit in one tiny spot, so I had to slightly peen it in about 1/4". Other than that, it was pretty much a bolt in.

Well, Max is on the DL right now. Coming home from the shop, the trans just went out. I wasn't on the car or anything. I was cruising about 50mph and all of a sudden the engine revs went up and I gave the car a little gas and it went nowhere. Coasted to the side of the road, checked the level, was full and not burned, but no trans action in any position. After sitting a few, I started it up and it went into gear, then cut back out down the road. Repeated this 3 times till I made it home. I am thinking I might have broke the front pump gears.
Oh well, time for a new trans. I knew it would be soon, I just figured it would have happened under more interesting circumstances. :D

The coolant level in your degas bottle looks a tad low... but that is one wicked setup. I have heard about Ford experimenting with the 5.4 2V V8 in pre-03 Panthers but did not like the results (they weren't supercharged of course) and ended up choosing the 4.6 4V V8 for the Marauder instead of a 5.4 2V V8.

I've got an 04 MM 4R75 trans coming for it, so might be back in business soon. I'll just have the stock converter redone and beefed up (intercpetors use the Mustang converter). My landlord here where my shop is, does converters, so it prolly won't cost me much.

That's cool, now people can stop fighting about if it can or cannot be done. Not so fast...The base car here is a 2000 CV/PI, not an '03 and up Panther frame. Besides, it was never a "fight", just a matter of how much fudging and tooling was needed, and what that would cost to change out a stock 4.6L for a 5.4L engine.
This is hopeful progress yes, but the jury is still out on fitment in a Marauder.

09-14-2006, 03:55 PM
Does this mean that we can indeed fit the newer Ford 5.4 3V (minus blower) with relative ease? I heard only good things about said engines but I don't claim to know much about the subject (hense why I ask you good folks).

I heard only good things about said engines but I don't claim to know much about the subject (hense why I ask you good folks). Though I don't know the exact dimensions right now, I suspect the 3 V SOHC is actually smaller than the 4V. I don't see any serious problem with dropping a 3V 4.6 into a Marauder. Induction plumbing, oil filter and radiator hoses may be a chore, but the are easy fixes for these problems right out of the parts bin. Height of the upper intake is an unknown right now too, but it looks like a fit at first glance, IMHO.
SergntMac
09-15-2006, 10:15 AM
Here's a pic of the 3V engine with intake in place. I'd guess it would fit just fine, but I don't know about the accessores, i.e. AC/PS/Alternator, and so on.

The 3V is a little more compact from a packaging standpoint, due to the valve cover shape. It should be an easy fit. You'd have to remove the DBW throttle body and swap over a conventional one, and also disable the variable cam timing, but they make kits for that. Other than that, it should all bolt in to OEM parts. The 3V cooling system is just like the 4v, so that should work good too.
I wouldn't put a 3v in place of the factory 4v motor, but it would be a sweet upgrade for a CV/GM.

IMHO, if you know how to tune the EEC, any EEC-V will do. I put an '04 MAV2 EEC in my '03 300A, and it worked with Jerry W's help. I picked up some tuning parameters and dual knock sensors, but Jerry could not get into the PATS. No big deal.

Is it possible to drop the 3 valve 4.6 or 5.4 into a 2005 or 2006 CVPI and still retain the drive by wire? I guess you would still have to get rid of the VVT system.

Wrong debates.
The debate here was (is) about installing the 5.4L DOHC engine in a Marauder, your other debate must be on another board...CVN?
My apologies, yes, the debate has long been running on CVN. Looking through the archives, I'd say since '03 or so. :argue:
Up until recently (on CVN), it had long been argued that even the marauder's 4.6 won't fit well/properly in the pre-03 vics, due to space constraints. But that's a debate which is better left alone. ;)
At any rate, I would expect that the 5.4 engine would likewise fit in a Marauder, as the crossmember seems to allow more space for the oil pan (hence, the increased oil capacity from 02 to the 03+), and other components are built with the larger DOHC 4.6 in mind.
