This photo was taken by a soldier in Afghanistan of a helicopter rescue mission. The pilot is a Pennsylvania National Guard guy who flies EMS choppers in civilian life. Now how many people on this planet do you reckon could set the rear end of a chopper down on the roof top of a shack on a steep mountain cliff and hold it there ... while soldiers load wounded men in the rear? If this does not impress you ... nothing probably ever will. Can you imagine the nerve, talent and ability evidenced here.

God bless our troops.

I've got plenty of time logged on CH-47D Chinooks as a gunner.

The crew chief on the ramp talked him into that position. Not to say the pilot doesn't have skill, but you just can't back up those big bastages.

Those crews have an impressive amount of skill with flying and maintaining machines that were built when disco was still in!

Sometimes,.... I miss the Army. but, it quickly passes! :P

Great photo!

There was an excellent book written by a Helo pilot in Nam. A lot of detail about the choppers and some hair raising *****e, like making your own LZ with the tail rotor and such. Our guys and gals are the best!!!

I think PBS or H had a thing on Air Mobile and the development of the Helo through the Military. They had a long part about choppers in Vietnam, the two parts I remember most are the part about the "Dustoff' choppers (Medevac), these guys would fly into some serious $hizzat to get wounded out. And the other was the AF Search & recovery guys (Jolly Green Giant), these guys would stay until the job was done, period. Some really hairy stuff.

If you want to get a good idea of the helicopter support in Vietnam, get a copy of the movie "We Were Soldiers". That's a true story as told by some of the folks who were there. 1st Cav -- 1st Team !!! :bows:

For the full effect, watch it on Dolby Surround at about level 68.
