Cracked and blown trans axle...it's over for me.

Yup, trans axle housing is blown open. Parts all over the yard. Motor is good, but the tractor is done.

My cheapo 38" cut 12.5 hp MTD riding mower took a major hit after 9 years of extreme abuse. All that remains is 4 semi bald tires, a grass catcher kit, and a strong Briggs-Stranton motor.

I am giving my grass bagger kit to my honorable neighbor, as it only fits an MTD, he has one, and has done so much for me over the years.

The tractor will be scrapped next week.

It runs quite well. But has boo-koo hours and a few small class-I leaks.

I stepped up to a Huskavarna 42" 18.5 hp with the newer Hydro-trans rather than the pos gear box the MTD's use.

Good choice with the Husky, great mower. It may, be where I'm from, but I wouldn't call your old mower a tractor, by any stretch of the imagination sorry.

Trade secret: Most all of the lawn tractors are made by MTD (including some expensive names!). IF you want durability, step up to a GT (garden tractor). They are able to handle ground engaging devices which the LT'(lawn tractor) won't.

MTD does offer an MMX belt drive and a pulley upgrade to give it a little more ommph at start up.

My Honda 4518 2 cylinder watercooled hydrostat w/a 48" cut has been abused ever since 1991. I just put a new timming belt on it and I cannot brag enough on what a great servant it has been. Anyone else have a Honda rider?

We have a Murray with a 17 horse 2cyl Briggs and stratton, it was my dads - it stopped working sometime after the oil fell out. :)

It's been sitting so long I'm not sure a new motor would help it out, or not.

I'd get it for my Monkey Wards but that 'ol 12hp single cylinder is running like a champ now. :)

I got a '63 J. Deere 36 inch walk behind rebuilt once, nice Briggs engine, 14 years on the rebuild,play with it too. I got some .250 thick sbr rubber sheet and made a skirt to go around the outter frame last week to increase the lift of the grass and to get a more even cut and to scatter the clippings better. Works. I now am well cut and bent in the direction I am going, that makes major stripes, yesterday I cut the lawn in "S"es, great big ones,the guy next door is selling his house and I am the White Devil.

I've had good luck with my MTDs.

If anybody would like an 18-horse twin cylinder Craftsman with a rusted out deck and an assortment of other problems, I just might help you load it!

MTD's non-hydro at least lets you shift on the fly... the Craftsman really didn't let me do much of anything.

Anybody pull a trail mower too? I've got a 44" Swisher offset behind my 20 hp MTD garden tractor (14 forward speeds!) so I'm clipping 7" at a pass... great time machine if you don't mind driving two things at once.
