This was a very lucky Indiana State Highway Patrol sergeant. His
guardian angel was obviously watching over him.

============================== ===============

The life of Sgt. Rich Kelly of the Lafayette Post was spared today.

He was sitting along side I-65 conducting a level III inspection
(mechanical
vehicle inspection) of a commercial vehicle when another semi-tractor
pulling a flatbed ran over the top of his police car.
Sgt. Kelly sustained a broken vertebra and was able to exit his car
and use
his cell telephone to call for help. The driver that struck him was
going
too
fast and locked his brakes up thus losing control. The crash is
still under
investigation. When you look at the photos, you realize that only by
the
Grace of God was Sgt. Kelly's life spared. Rich and his wife have 4
young
daughters....
It is hard to believe that Sgt. Kelly survived this crash and may
get out
of
the hospital sometime today. He was in the car at the time of the
crash
conducting a mechanical vehicle inspection. The driver he stopped
was
placed out
of service for violations and the driver that struck him was
operating with
poor brakes on the trailer.

Was that LEO lucky!!!! Glad he wasn't hurt... Another testament to the survivability of the panther. I think it will all buff out:D

Looks like a Crown Vic. IMO he didn't stand a chance in any other vehicle.
Praying for a speedy recovery.

This has been posted before with video. Like I said then. No gas tank explosion!

If his department had been using new impys, he wouldn't have made it.

Exactly my thought. I work for local govt, and I say a prayer for safety every time I see one of our local LEOs in an Impala. I think we show disregard for the lives of officers by cheaping out on the vehicles and gasoline. I hope someday to be in a position to influence those kinds of decisions.

There was a 3 fatality crash in southeastern Ohio last week involving a pickup and an OHP CV. The P/U driver and both Troopers were killed. It apperaed that both vehicles were totally burned. Anyone see anything on the web?

Incredible the "cage" could save him. I imagine the jaws of life were used. These are bigger:

Makes me cringe because I drive a Whimpala now,,, that is why I bought a Panther for the daily driver. Glad he is ok.

The red hose in the foreground is a handline used for fire suppression if needed or to wash away fluids after vehicle removal.
