View Full Version : Choice of Stall Converter

I would like the membership's advice on the choice of a performance stall converter speed. Not the brand, but the stall speed, 3K or 3.5K. I have already selected the brand and vendor.

As I understand it the 03 models have a 2400 stall converter but the 04 model (mine) have a 2700 stall converter.

My purpose in changing the stall converter is to gain "umph" off the line.
The S/C route is out of my price range for years to come. However, I now have the means to purchase and install a performance converter.

As my signature states my car is equipped with 4:10 gears and a Lideo Marauder tune. Rear tires are 29 inches in Diameter KDWS2, somewhat bigger than the stock tire.

My driving regime is mostly street, (lite to lite) and occasional strip. No high speed (80 MPH+) sustained driving.

Thanks in advance for your input, you folks have the experience driving with higher stall converters and I don't, hence the query.

I went with a 3000 stall and I have been very happy with the performance.

I am boosted. It has been recommended to me by several folks that I respect, that I should install a 3500 Stall TQ when the time comes.

I had a 3,000 stall N/A for 25K+ and 3,500 stall S/C for 23K+.

I recc the 3,500.

The brand I have is the PI.

No need to brake new ground here. The difference in 3000/3500 is not that great, that said if you like street stuff, light to light go with closer to 3000,why? Less heat build up while your playing.
Honestly I can't tell if I have a 3000 or 3500 on the street from a dead stop the rear tires just sssspppppiiiinnnnnn.
At the track just as the car moved the tach "stalled" between 3000 and 3500,3300 maybe?
The rear gear and total vehicle weight will "adjust" the stall RPM a little too.

I talked to the guys at Precision Industries on what stall they'd recommend for my NA MM. I do plan on adding a S/C one day (maybe I'll win one from the next raffle :D ) and it will be either a Trilogy or a Kenne Bell, if Zack can get it working, and they recommended a 3200 for now and then a 3000 once I S/C. The nice thing about PI is that they give you one free stall change. You just have to take it out and send it to them.
BTW... I happend to be in Memphis, Tn. and I stopped by and picked my TC from PI. It's now sitting in my garage :(

The powerline on my dyno chart said 3200, so this is what I went with, as well.

A PI 3000 stall converter is what I have. Get stock in a major tire company. Traction off the line with streets tires is a joke, but if you are able to hook, then it's wrap factor 2 Scotty.:burnout:

The beauty of the PI converter is Jack will upgrade it twice for free, 3500 is completly ok for the street, and I would do another group buy of five or more.

I got a 2800 PI and am happy with it. Worked good while N/A and I'm still happy with it with the S/C.

Just got a 3000 with Reinhart. I like it so far. I don't even know it's there 'till the hammer falls. Then, hold on to you hat!

Make sure you get a good tune from someone experienced with our heavy arsed cars. I believe that makes all the difference in driveability.

Do these stall converters lock up on the highway? I take the car on trips at 70-75mph and do not want to sacrifice highway drivability. is 3000 enough or is 3500 too much? 4.10s,pullies,cold air, and tune.

Yes they lock up and 3500 is fine for the street give Jackie a call and get your name on the list.

OK guys, thanks for all your input. I've decided to go with the PI 3500 and ordered it this AM from Dennis.

I'll report back after a few weeks on how it drives and accelerates.

I send you my 3K stall, I get a 3500 stall no questions asked?? Just pay for the shipping and labor?
