Why V10's

Here is a interesting article that talks about BMW's new M5 that incorporates V10 power (Autoweek (http://www.autoweek.com/cat_content.mv?port_code=autow eek&cat_code=carnews&loc_code=index&content_code=07407679) ). It seems that the US manaufactures can not see the potential of this combination. Makes you wonder about where our performance cars will come from?

It seems that the German's can make power just using the engine without having to supercharge. Why can this much power be made overseas and the american made 4.6/5.4 supercharged engine(s) do not even make close to this power?

Most Formula 1 engines are V10 - 3.0l to 3.5l engines producing 780 - 880 hp.
Normally aspirated. No turbo or supercharger.

I have to admit, that I would have choosen an M5, if I had the funds! What a sweet ride. Current M5 model is a V8, rear wheel drive, 400hp family sedan!
Comes stock like that from the factory!

Oh well, the MM certainly is a nice ride for a lot less money!

So V10_P70, are you going to have any 1/4 mile numbers for us any time soon? Would like to know how your beast would do on the Dragstrip.

One of the reasons I bought the MM was because I couldn't afford an M5.

They are worlds apart in performance and value. I love my MM, but I still covet the M5.

I have a V10 in my RV. Smooth and tons of torque. Love that part. Gets about 7-8 mpg but it'll cruise at 80 with the rest of traffic.

I was with a friend who has owned 2 540's. I have always admired them. My father owned several 5 series in the 1980's.

My friend got tired of haveing a new block every 25k miles, he commutes 70 miles for work, on the 540's and switched to a 525.

BMW uses an aluminum block apparently without liners and they fail quite often between 25,000 and 40,000 miles.

Dude v 10s make hi rev power at a premium for ponies. Torque is low in their powerband relatively speaking. You want a 70k car buy it I cant as of yet ; ). BTw the fastest "production car" in the world was a 6 cyl...

What car was that? My guess would be a Porsche 911 GT 2 (Twin Turbo) with 456 hp.
They are still using their Boxer 6 design. BTW you can buy one of those, for the low, low price of $187000 !

0-62 mph in 4.1 sec
and the quarter mile in 12.09 sec at 119.9 mph

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm just curious and would like to know what the fastest Production 6 cylinder car is.

I'm not out to prove anything. A Porsche for almost $190000 should in my opinion go faster, but who knows.

Remember we are talking factory/production 6 cylinder.

Try the Grand Prix Honda V6 turbo I think over 1500 HP!!! but only 300 some Ft lbs torque and a top speed of around 275 MPH un governed. most it did was 225 MPH at Italian GP of 1988. But I knowed it was one mean engine at only 1.8 L of displacement but a 16,000 RPM red line :eek: :eek:
