This issue is affecting the 2003 cars with the factory shields installed. Should the car be able to withstand a 65-80 mph hit without fuel leakage? The current FMVSS standard is being revised to 50 mph. The question is what level the tool needs to be built to?

There was also a NC fire, or maybe two
You'll notice most of these have been big rigs going off the driving lane and onto the shoulder, hitting the vehicles.
Obviously there is a problem there.
The Shields were never meant to stop fuel spill completely, there can be other factors come into play there. Fuel in a tank that is compressed has to displace somewhere, as the fuel does not compress, and if it does there will be an explosion
The shields were meant to prevent certain suspension components from piercing the tanks. they have been tested to 75 mph, and passed that test.
Ford has already had a rear crash standard of 50mph for testing these vehicles, it is now being revised to 75 mph.
Even Fords old standard exceeds the new Federal standard that will come into effect for 2005.

LOL that link is to Firepanel, a company trying to sell their product as the solution.
The particular story is misleading and based on a press release by the Dallas city attorney who cried Ford lied, when in fact they hadn't. The test was to determine the effectiveness of the shields in preventing tank punctures, which they did.
The Dallas city attorney claims the fuel spillage violated a standard when in fact there is no standard for rear crash tests of over 30 mph.
the vehicles exceed the Federal standard on Fords crash test of over 50 mph.

Why did you start this thread? We have an active thread on CV/PI fires, quite a passionate one it is too. Informative and focused as well. IMHO, this thread is unnecessary. Please look around the site before adding confusion, thank you.
