Instead of top five favorites, how about top five favorite SLEEPER movies, i.e. movies that were not box office hits but were still excellent...

Mine..

1) The Miracle Mile (1988)

Harry finally meets the girl of his dreams--on the last day of Earth. Harry mistakenly picked up a ringing pay phone to learn that a nuclear war had already begun. Now with a ticking clock and a rioting city deteriorating around him, Harry must guide Julie to safety. But can he save himself as lawlessness becomes the norm and terror grips every living soul in the city?

2) City of Lost Children

In an alternate reality, children are being kidnapped by strange cyclopses and taken to the laboratory of an evil scientist named Krank, who steals their dreams because he has never had any of his own. Elsewhere, an orphan girl named Miette is sent on robbery jobs by her keepers, a set of female siamese twins known collectively as Octopus. Miette meets a man named One, who is the strong man at the local funfair. Together they embark on a journey to find One's little brother who has been kidnapped by the cyclopses.

3) Donnie Darko

During the presidential election of 1988, a teenager named Donnie Darko sleepwalks out of his house one night, and sees a giant, demonic-looking rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. He returns home the next morning to find that a jet engine has crashed through his bedroom. As he tries to figure out why he survived and tries to deal with people in his town, like the school bully, his conservative health teacher, and a self-help guru, Frank continues to turn up in Donnie's mind, causing him to commit acts of vandalism and worse.

4) Night Falls on Manhatten

Attorney Sean Cassey is called on by the New York District Attorney to try drug kingpin Jordon Washington, accused of murdering two cops and injuring a third, Sean's father. The publicity from the trial is a boom to Sean's career, but when Washington's lawyer, Sam Vigoda, makes accusations of police corruption that hit Sean too close to home, Sean is divided between justice, his career, and his family.

5) Fearless

After a terrible air disaster, survivor Max Klein emerges a changed person. Unable to connect to his former life or to wife Laura, he feels godlike and invulnerable. When psychologist Bill Perlman is unable to help Max, he has Max meet another survivor, Carla Rodrigo, who is racked with grief and guilt since her baby died in the crash which she and Max survived.

This took some thought but here goes in no particular order:

1. Lord of the Rings (all 3 but Return of the King was the best)
2. Saving Private Ryan
3. The Green Mile
4. Gladiator

I love war movies....

Then check out The Big Red One (1980). It stars Lee Marvin, Mark Hamil and David Carridine:

A US Army sergeant who participated in the First World War now leads a rifle squad in the same division in which he's served, the First Infantry. The squad participates in combat action from storming Vichy French Africa into the long seige of Sicily and Italy, into D-Day at Omaha Beach, and onward through the push to Germany. Along the way the squad gets involved in several incidents with civilians, such as a French woman about to give birth and also in a firefight in an insane asylum. Throughout the war the Sergeant has engaged in a mini-battle of wills with Pvt. Griff, a semi-pacifist whose convictions are destroyed in a horrific scene amid the human genocide of a concentration camp in 1945.

Tough question, but the only way I could answer it is to look at those DVDs that I've purchased and continue to watch over and over again (sorry, had to exceed five).

The Thing (1950s original with James Arness; as a little kid, it scared the hell out of me in the movie theater, late 50s)

Titanic (sappy, but really good effects)

Viva Las Vegas (Elvis and Anne Margret, does anything else matter?) and GI Blues; (just makes me feel good to watch them both)

The Lost Boys and Fright Night (good blend of horror, humor, and music)

Last of the Mohicans (Daniel Day Lewis, great soundtrack, fantastic ending, A-1 villain)

Eddie and the Cruisers (highlight of Michael Pare's career (?); great tunes and a NJ Shore setting)

Bullitt (THE chase scene and a flashback to San Francisco in the 60's)

Little trivia for you: HAL was a poke in the eye of IBM. Each letter is a single letter back of the letters I....B....and...M.

Actually, Clarke has said this was a coincidence and had he realised the connection, he would have changed it. IBM does have a large product placement in the movie, however. (HAL = Hueristic ALgorithmic computer)

Here's an interesting bit of trivia:

The full text of the Zero Gravity Toilet Instructions: ZERO GRAVITY TOILET PASSENGERS ARE ADVISED TO READ INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USE

1. The toilet is of the standard zero-gravity type. Depending on requirements, System A and/or System B can be used, details of which are clearly marked in the toilet compartment. When operating System A, depress lever and a plastic dalkron eliminator will be dispensed through the slot immediately underneath. When you have fastened the adhesive lip, attach connection marked by the large "X" outlet hose. Twist the silver coloured ring one inch below the connection point until you feel it lock.
2. The toilet is now ready for use. The Sonovac cleanser is activated by the small switch on the lip. When securing, twist the ring back to its initial-condition, so that the two orange line meet. Disconnect. Place the dalkron eliminator in the vacuum receptacle to the rear. Activate by pressing the blue button.
3. The controls for System B are located on the opposite wall. The red release switch places the uroliminator into position; it can be adjusted manually up or down by pressing the blue manual release button. The opening is self adjusting. To secure after use, press the green button which simultaneously activates the evaporator and returns the uroliminator to its storage position.
4. You may leave the lavatory if the green exit light is on over the door. If the red light is illuminated, one of the lavatory facilities is not properly secured. Press the "Stewardess" call button on the right of the door. She will secure all facilities from her control panel outside. When green exit light goes on you may open the door and leave. Please close the door behind you.
5. To use the Sonoshower, first undress and place all your clothes in the clothes rack. Put on the velcro slippers located in the cabinet immediately below. Enter the shower. On the control panel to your upper right upon entering you will see a "Shower seal" button. Press to activate. A green light will then be illuminated immediately below. On the intensity knob select the desired setting. Now depress the Sonovac activation lever. Bathe normally.
6. The Sonovac will automatically go off after three minutes unless you activate the "Manual off" over-ride switch by flipping it up. When you are ready to leave, press the blue "Shower seal" release button. The door will open and you may leave. Please remove the velcro slippers and place them in their container.
7. If the red light above this panel is on, the toilet is in use. When the green light is illuminated you may enter. However, you must carefully follow all instructions when using the facilities during coasting (Zero G) flight. Inside there are three facilities: (1) the Sonowasher, (2) the Sonoshower, (3) the toilet. All three are designed to be used under weightless conditions. Please observe the sequence of operations for each individual facility.
8. Two modes for Sonowashing your face and hands are available, the "moist-towel" mode and the "Sonovac" ultrasonic cleaner mode. You may select either mode by moving the appropriate lever to the "Activate" position. If you choose the "moist-towel" mode, depress the indicated yellow button and withdraw item. When you have finished, discard the towel in the vacuum dispenser, holding the indicated lever in the "active" position until the green light goes on...showing that the rollers have passed the towel completely into the dispenser. If you desire an additional towel, press the yellow button and repeat the cycle.
9. If you prefer the "Sonovac" ultrasonic cleaning mode, press the indicated blue button. When the twin panels open, pull forward by rings A & B. For cleaning the hands, use in this position. Set the timer to positions 10, 20, 30 or 40...indicative of the number of seconds required. The knob to the left, just below the blue light, has three settings, low, medium or high. For normal use, the medium setting is suggested.
10. After these settings have been made, you can activate the device by switching to the "ON" position the clearly marked red switch. If during the washing operation, you wish to change the settings, place the "manual off" over-ride switch in the "OFF" position. you may now make the change and repeat the cycle.

Wow, I thought no one else had ever seen this movie! Definitely in my top five, I think this is Peter Weir's best work and Jeff Daniels absolute best performance. Top notch. You have to read the novel by Rafael Iglesias to get the full effect.

There's an inherent difference, I think, between a sleeper and a cult movie. Some sleepers turn into cults, but I think for the most part, the sleeper films are ones not often talked about or discussed but for the few people who are able to watch these films, they are better off for seeing it.

Case in point, another film in my top 5: A Very Long Engagement, Magnificent piece of filmmaking. I urge you to watch this movie

I love movies. So far, my collection counts around 2000 DVD titles.

Damn! I thought I was a little overboard with the DVD collection, with 'only' 550 DVDs. Right now, I've run out of storage, and nned to decide if I will buy more shelving, or if it's time to completely overhaul the room.

How do you manage your collection? I've got DVDs stored TV shows seperate from movies, with select few held apart from the main collection, which are organized alphabetically... To track the collection, I use DVD Profiler (nice free little Database, which also puts the collection on the 'Net)

Here's my collection: http://www.intervocative.com/DVDCollection.aspx/Chilling

I would have thought "In Harm's Way", the "Bedford Incident" and "Gray Lady Down" would have made your list, too " :D

I don't think I've seen The Bedford Incident. The other two should have been honorable mentions.

Thanks Shipmate!

I dont not like hardly any movie, but it is truly sad when you have to add the year in () to denote which year of THE SAME TITLED MOVIE that you like. Some day Hollywood will actually make an original movie that was made here and not in some forigen culture that sees a tenth of the movies we but still manage originals!

The Bedford Incident --- Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier. Guided Missile Frigate ?? (FFG) playing cat-and-mouse with a Russian nuclear submarine. Mid-60s, I think. Very interesting and surprising ending. :D

I can't believe no one mentioned two of the best, "Mad Max" and "Road Warrior", both with Mel Gibson, of course. Included in the top five are: "Eraserhead" (Lynch), Dawn of the Dead (Romero), and Alien (not Aliens). Honorable mention, "The Blues Brothers", "Mad Mad Mad Mad World", and "Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii", "Five Days of the Condor" (R. Redford), Psycho (Hitchcock), Taxi Driver (DeNiro)
