View Full Version : What do you pay for your tags?

I've often wondered this, and another post here reminded me.

In IA it's baside upon the value and weight of the car, and mine has run $360 each year so far - supposedly it goes down after the car is over 3 years old, so next year maybe less?

Interesting note - they also have every single pickup (or vehicle classifed as one) at something like $68 or $72 no matter weight or value. This was to subsidize farming or something way back when. Now everyone has pickups for other reasons too, and they have discussed changing this. It would certainly increase the revenue.

What do you pay, and does anyone else have a funky rule like that?

When I was a kid, FL tags were weight and class based. Now it's just passenger car or other class. I think it's around fortyish bucks to renew every year. Thanks to all you tourists who subsidize our economy so I don't have to pay 360 bucks!!

$114 here in Nashville (Metro Davidson County) for custom plate tags. (I just bought mine so it's fresh in my mind.)

It's about $60 cheaper for non-custom plates.

My tags are about $65.00. and we have to have front plates as well as rear plates. I pay $30.00 extra to have my Cowboy Plates....all team or other special plates cost the same....if you get personalized plates it $30.00 on top of the special plate. If its just personalized it $30.00 on top of the regular plate fee. and if you loose a plate...it cost $5.00 to get a replacement plate....only on regular plates though. Specialty and Personalized are a little more. Cars and trucks are about the same here...I had an '89 Bronco that cost about the same as my Taurus and the Marauder. When I had My Sentra it was about $54.00.

Trucks are a little cheaper to register in Texas, but not by much. There are also a few other factors that make a small difference - which county you live in (basically metro vs. rural), age of vehicle, etc.

Most of my vehicles cost about $75 a year for registration fees.

I also pay $20 a year per vehicle to have this plate (http://www.dot.state.tx.us/services/vehicle_titles_and_registratio n/specialty_plates/public_servant_and_other/specialplate.htm?nbr=76&type=PS) and an additional $40 a year to have the one which is personalized.

I forgot to add, the personalization is a one-time $25 fee. On that part we do OK.

Is Iowa seriously one of the highest out there? THAT would be interesting.

I think Nebraska is worse / more expensive than Iowa.

As a kid growing up in Nebraska, I couldn't understand why so many people I knew who actually lived in Nebraska had Iowa plates on their cars. My folks told me that those people probably registered them to a family member's address in Iowa or something. My folks said it was because it cost so much money to register a car in Nebraska.

When we moved to Texas, my folks were stunned at how much cheaper it was here. Of course, our insurance is generally more expensive and we have to pay for a yearly inspection sticker - about $39.50 a pop if you live in a "smog check" county.

In Pa. from which I just moved the marauder and '92 F-150 were both 24.00 per year.

In New Jersey the maraduer is 71.00 and the F-150 75.00 this is one year.

State inspection in Pa. is all private and is $80.00
State inspection in N.J. is private and State run. Private is $80.00 State run is free.

I forget what special plates cost. Pa. is rear only N.J. is front and back:mad:

No I not putting a front plate on the marauder so send my tickets now!

In Virginia:

Standard Plates are $29.50
Vanity Plates are $37.50
Specialty Plates are $51.50 (a portion goes to charity or foundation of choice)

In addition, the county/state assesses an annual Personal Property tax of $3.70 per $100 of NADA Blue Book value. So, on a $20,000 car, the PP tax bill is $740.00 per year. This decreases as the value depreciates. This tax (the hated car tax) was supposed to go away in increments starting back in 1997. However, it never got below 30% .... meaning that we still pay $222.00 of that $740.00 PP tax bill each year.

It's actually a little more complicated than that; but good enough decription for here. Oh yeah, the sticker for the windshield to show that you paid your car tax costs $25.00 ... plus the mandatory annual state safety and emissions inspections (every 2 years).

Yeah, Virginia sucks and every year the legislature is looking for new and creative ways to make the tax bill higher.

Illinois...Can't remember standard passenger car rates, but my LE plates are 105.00 per year. 25 bucks goes into the state fund to pay bills and educate kids of LEOs killed in the line of duty.

City of Chicago vehicle tag is 75 bucks, 105 bucks if vehicle is over 4500 pounds.

Here in St. Louis tags are priced by horsepower rating for me 39 bucks (not what i should be paying) +3.50 processing fee for one year, with the option of 2 yr tags.

Trucks go by weight local and beyond local which for me =25.75+3.50 processing fee.
Personalized or $15+ regular renewal fee.
You have to have PP from previous year before you can get either. two yrs if you get 2 yr tags. You only get new plates if you register a new vehicle and don't transfer from another vehicle or if this your first one.
Other wise all you get is that funny materialed tag. We had been using the same bkgrd and letter color from 1979-1996. We also have to run front and back.

No one has checked in from MI but for my MM here I pay 159.00 a year for the standard blue regular old plate not sure about personalized or the other plates dont want to ask cause I think that is way to much, cause they sure arent using that to make the roads better. The blue plate is the cheapest if I'm not mistaken I think I read they are phasing out that plate so who knows if it will go up.

NC, plate renewal is $28 per year for passenger vehicles. We also have $30/year for inspection, and property tax depending on your municipality or county (something like 1.5% in Wake County).

NC also has the fun "Highway Use Tax" which is payable when you purchase a vehicle, new or used. 3% of the purchase price, no ceiling. Thankfully it's a one-time fee.

Amen to that! Especially if you own 6 cars. My bill to renew them all next month is $257, which includes a couple of vanity plates, and one Year of Manufacture plate that is only $31-go figure. Of course, there is that one time 'impact fee' that you get hit with when you first register a car here-that hurts!
What I DON'T understand is why FL insists on this one year only reg deal that expires on your birthday...my b-day is Dec 31 so it's easy for me to remember, but if it was May 12th or similar..forget it! What a PIA.
