Wow, no wonder the Mercedes were able to fly. Those straights are so long that any attainable speed is possible without regard to slowing, forever. The top of the rpm guage in every gear all the time. Attrition must be wholesale in the 24 hours race. Dennis

Thats back when Le Mans was a real fantastic track. They damn sure ruined the track with chicanes in the Mulsanne straight (as it remains today). I think I read somewhere it was either Rolf Stommelen or Jackie Ikxx said he liked the Mulsanne straight because as he was driving his Porsche 917 about 240 mph there he had time for a quick cigarette! Le Mans, Spa and Riverside were the coolest tracks ever I think (along with the Mountain Course for the Isle of Man TT for bikes, see below). Great video.

Yeah but Death was a given and a way of life..An acceptable risk...My how times have changed for the better with the safe barriers and chicanes ect...Its amazing to see the mindset of say 40-50 years ago...

I've been to the LeMans race twice, the last race of the Mulsanne straight before the chicanes were installed and the first year with the chicanes in it. An incredible experience. Saw Jaguar win and Mercedes. Was hoping for a Porsche win.
