Ok, went in to swap coils from #8. Removed the CAI and notice some heavy black ****nit around the TB butterflys ( blades ). I remember the dealer I worked for used to do a throttle body service but cannot remember what solvent they used. Any suggestions? Also, Can I clear the code myself? How?

Thanks

Don

If you go to Walmart or any auto parts store, you should be able to find an aerosol spray which is specifically designed for cleaning throttle bodies.

I've got some in the garage. I'll go out there later and take a look for the specific brand if you'd like.

This (http://www.crcindustries.com/auto/content/prod_detail.aspx?PN=05078&S=N) is my favourite.

Do not clean your throttle body. It has a coating on it that you will destroy if you clean it.

Following is a cut and paste from the 2004 Marauder service manual

The throttle body:

*controls air supply to the upper intake manifold by positioning the throttle plate.
*connects the accelerator cable and, if equipped, the speed control actuator cable to the throttle lever.
*is not adjustable.
*cannot be cleaned.

Thanks for the C&P. Are you referring to the inside or the outside?. What I am referring to is the carbon build up on the inside of the unit itself.

Both Ford and GM have Top Engine cleaners in a spray can
that are safe for Throttle Bodies.

I know about the "do not clean them" warnings, but I must admit that I've cleaned many *sticky* and *dirty* throttle bodies in my day using a soft terry cloth and some throttle body spray like RFOverlord posted.

Throttle response was always better afterward and I've never seen any ill effects from my cleanings.

In fact, my wife's 2001 Yukon XL had a screwy idle problem develop over time and for the life of me I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. I finally took a look inside the throttle body and noticed it was really dirty in there. A quick cleaning and the thing has run like a sewing machine ever since.

I guess each person just has to weigh the risks vs. reward.

For me, I see very little risk and a whole lot of reward.

I have cleaned mine several time when it sticks closed ever so slightly....causing "off idle" acceleration to jump!!

I use Havoline TB cleaner and have seen no evidence of any coating coming off....maybe it's all GONE??

If it's not supposed to be cleaned then what is the official service procedure?

If it's not supposed to be cleaned then what is the official service procedure?Any bets that the proceedure is "replace"?

I have swapped several TBs over the past year, and cleaned all of them. For the life of me, I cannot see any protective coating on TBs, or inside the upper/lower intake. What ever that is, I haven't encountered it yet.
