Our seven month old Ocicat kitten was off his feed yesterday, and throwing up. By the time Barb got home, Calvin was lethargic and not the wild thing we were used to. I called the vet and off we went. After an x ray there was concern of intestinal blockage, and possible surgery; but first a barium x ray series was decided upon, as well as hydration. Fortunately, Calvin's system was open, front to back, the x rays reveled, and we were able to bring the little fellow home about 8PM.
Upon reflecting upon what might have caused his distress we settled on my skin cancer. You see, I had a couple of cancers burned off, last week and part of the recovery is to wash the wound with hydrogen peroxide, cover with ointment, then a bandage. What's this have to do with Calvin, you ask? He's a kitten and gets into and investigates everything, including the Q-tips from the trash can, where I had carelessly thrown them, which he promptly retrieved, to play with. It seems, according to the Vet. cats are exquisitely sensitive to Hydrogen peroxide, and it makes them throw up. Of course it could have any of the hundreds of bugs and god knows what else the little fellow might have swallowed, but, for now peroxide seems to be the culprit.
Calvin's on a bland diet for a few days, but seems more like himself, this morning, and we had a few rounds of "fetch" with his favorite ball. I throw it, he goes crashing after it, then brings it back, drops it in my slipper, and off we go on another round. BTW, Ocicat's are supposed to be the largest breed, and Calvin tipped the scales, yesterday at 7.2lbs, even in his dehydrated condition, and with an empty stomach.
Thanks in advance for your good wishes, we think he's gonna be just fine.:)

Glad to hear the quat is doing fine. Maybe since Hobbs is getting up in years you should get another Ocicat to keep Calvin busy. :cat:

We don't have really good photos, yet, 'cause it's hard to get Calvin to stand still long enough, except now. Here's a website, and we expect Calvin to be just like the fellow in the picture; although he seems to be a little more silver. http://www.cfainc.org/breeds/profiles/ocicat.html
I couldn't want a better pal, though, in my retirement, as he goes everywhere with me, on my adventures, and loves to ride. Hopefully he'll learn to hunt rabbits.:bunny:

They do love Q-tips - my cats go crazy with them - they leave them all over the house.
I'm glad he's doing better.

Glad he's ok, Mike.
Here's a tidbit on pets.. I heard that if your cat OR dog has a case of the runs, feed them Tender Vittles (a cat food) and apparently it fixes them in a jiffy.

Good to know about the peroxide. We got all the dangerous plants relocated when we picked up our kitten a bit ago.

Glad that Calvin is doing better and I appreciate the info. I have been looking for a replacement cat for my mother. I had not heard of the Ocicat and they sound perfect. Keep us posted on the hunting activities, Mike.:D Dennis:gangster: :bunny:

Now, that's some.....cat! (insert obvious joke here).:D
We have two little furries of our own running around the house---Tabitha (11 lbs at her last checkup a few weeks ago) and Shadow (10.5 lbs at his last checkup, the same time). They're a brother/sister pair that we adopted a year and 1/2 ago now from a cat rescue organization in STL; momma was a Bengal, poppa was a rollin' stone. These two aren't any special breed...just a couple of domestic shorthair mutts.
I worry about these two constantly; Shadow in particular has demonstrated a capacity for jumping up into high places that you wouldn't think he could reach. At the checkup, Tabitha had to be examined for a sprained foreleg that she gave herself by jumping off the second-story banister of the stairwell...and going all the way to the ground floor. She got over it quickly enough, but we've tried to catproof the banister in the meantime. (No luck...the little furry nitwit tried to get back up there again!:shake: )
It's good to hear yours is going to be okay. In an attempt to be helpful, please allow me to offer this tip: we use short small-diameter bungee cords to keep the kitchen/bathroom cabinets from being explored. Just wrap them around the door pulls, and even Calvin won't be able to pull it open.

 Oh my gosh! He hasn't learned about exploring the cabinets ...yet; but, evidently has 15 months to learn. Thanks for the warning. ;)
I can't wait for him to "find" the door in Barb's hutch, where she's got the Christmas cards from the last 20 years stashed, or watch the avalanche when he finally climbs to the top of the stack on the top shelf of her desk. :D
