Well I figured this site would be the best source for information.

I am going to be joining the Air Force very soon. Once I get through basic and tech school and get my station assignment I'm going to be in the market for a new car. I have liked the Marauder since they came out in 2003. I was contemplating an 03 Cobra black on black, but they are a bit pricey, and me being younger the insurance would be outrageous. So how bout a four door cobra?

I currently own 3 Thunderbird SC's with some upgrades, so big fast Ford's are nothing new to me. However this would be my first modular powered vehicle.

I have been browsing the forums here and I see some cars listed as 300A and 300B. What does that refer to?

Also is the 2004 worth the extra money over a 2003 or if I can find a good deal on an '03 should I just snatch it up. I am definately getting a black Marauder because, well to me that is the only color. I like silver, but the Marauder I think looks better in black. (It'd look really cool with a front mount intercooler behind the black grille and with some sort of forced induction under the hood)

What are the main differences between 2003 and 2004 Marauders? I recall hearing they changed the torque convertor in 04. Can anyone fill me in on the stall speeds for the torque convertors in 03 and 04? Any other differences?

I am looking for a comfortable daily driver with power, something good to travel in, I will be attempting to make WFC every year assuming I'm not stationed over seas, as well as any other Marauder events I can. I am currently a member of SCCoA and I attend all the SC events that I can. I am looking to put the SC's up for a while and go through the engine in one of them, and I need a car to drive to work everyday. I know how big the trunks are in these cars which will be good for going grocery shopping and I will probably put a stereo system in the car as well as a nitrous bottle. I also like to golf so I need to be able to put my clubs in the trunk. I think the Marauder better fits the bill than the cobra.

My other question is about the engine. I know the 4.6L DOHC is similar to the non SC Cobra's, Lincoln Mark VIII, and Mustang Mach 1. But that means it doesn't have the forged crank, rods, or pistons correct? How much boost and or nitrous do you think the engine can handle with a proper tune? I am not one to leave a car stock, so the Marauder will be modified.

I plan to do a baseline dyno pull and a test and tune night at the track when I get it bone stock to see how much power it puts down and how quick I can get it to run. Then the mods will begin and I will occassionally take it back to the track. I like to drag race, but I'm not the kind of guy who is running the hell out of his car every friday night at the track. I just want to know what it can do, and when I upgrade something I'll run it again. I will also run it at some track events if I can attend and maybe in the NMRA bracket class if it comes to a track near me.

I have always liked the Marauders, but the day I was at the NMRA Michigan race and saw Lidio running in the 11's with his Marauder, I knew then that I would have one in the near future.

I don't know if I will be buying a trilogy kit as they are pricey, but I do want to go some route of forced induction once I get the car paid down a bit. Maybe at first I'll do the bolt ons and nitrous and a tune and see what it nets me. I'm very interested in the new big bore Kenne Bell blowers that just came on the market, and I would like to someday put a twin screw on my car. However I think I'd either rebuild or replace the short block with a forged crank, rods, and pistons first so I wouldn't worry about when it's gonna ventilate the block.

What size slicks or drag radials can fit on the stock wheels? I see Alternative can widen the rears for 305/30/18 Nitto's but what if I want to keep the stock width wheels?

Also from my experience with Modular DOHC motors, they are kind of weak below 4000 rpm so I can imagine in a heavy marauder that gears would really wake it up. What would be best for a car that will be a street driver but see some track duty from time to time? 3.73, 4.10, 4.30, 4.56?

One last question, whats a typical Marauder weigh with say a full tank of gas, and no driver, no extra luggage?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I know I had a lot of questions, but I'm trying to learn all I can so I can make informed decisions on buying the car and which parts to upgrade. Thanks to all and happy holidays.

Personally, and this is just my opinion, the extra price you'll pay for an '04 isn't worth it. The differences are too minor to justify the premium.

I suggest snatching up a nice clean '03 300A if you can find one.

Again, just my opinion.

Good luck, and welcome to the site!

Scott,

Welcome to the site of the Mercury Marauder.

The 300A's were the early builds that included pockets in the front buckets, electric gas door, full-size spare and clock in the dash. To name a few. The 300B's decontented the above wares.

All '04's were 300A's and included a moon roof as an option and bun warmers.

I believe the stall speed on a '04 is around 2,800 rip'ms. The '03's around 2,400, IIRC?

Wear out the search feature on this site as all your questions will be answered.

Mike.

Thanks, the more I'm looking the more I'm thinking 03. I can always put in a set of gears and a higher stall torque convertor, so I'm not too worried. Those are planned mods anyways. As well as a shift kit.

Whats the 300A?

I have seen a few with dash clock and map pockets, actually I like those the best.

Do they all have the keyless entry panel on the drivers door? I'm not fond of that. I guess I could have it removed/filled/painted by a body shop. I plan on an alarm with remote start so the keypad is useless to me.

Yes,

All keyless pads, and I use it constantly.

Update you sig showing where you are?

There you go. I'm closer to Chicago than Detroit, and I'm looking around the Chicago Area for a Marauder. Probably buy one around June.

Anything I should look out for when inspecting and test driving a used Marauder?

The Marauder is such a unique car that it would take a long, hard thought to remember a car that delivered such mystique (maybe the Taurus SHO or Buick GNX). People ask me what it is. Everyone says they thought you could only get them in black. Mine is a late production 2004 (March '04) and only has 28K miles on it. Mine has a factory sunroof and the exhaust is music at 50MPH with the OD off. Cops think I am a State Trooper. Friends think I am a detective. Ricers think I am an easy target. However, I get Xmas cards from Exxon and BFGoodrich. The Marauder begs to be driven with both feet on the throttle. Welcome aboard. You have entered a realm where friendships and trust are automatic. I have met some of the nicest and most generous folks here on MM.net. You will too. Make the jump and get your Marauder - they get more rare every day!

Scott,

Good luck in the Air Force and good luck with getting a Marauder when you get settled. Mine's a stock 300A I've had for a couple of years (I bought it used) and I still love it as much as the day I bought it. It is a fantastic road car with the good handling of a much smaller car and the performance of a V8 Mustang with room for the family. You also have plenty of room in back for that system and speakers.

Not a bad circle track car, either! (Picture of the "Lucky 13" at New Smyrna Speedway, Marauderville IV!)

Smell the oil cap for gasoline smell (blowby from hard driving), run a CarFax, inspect every nook and cranny for paint or repairs. Check the inner front tires for wear. Lift the carpet in the trunk and look for rust or repairs. See if the TSB's have been done. Drive it and have somebody start it COLD while you watch the exhaust - you don't want to see a puff of smoke. When you buy it, guard it with your life.

Scott, welcome aboard.
IMHO you can't go wrong with either choice, as you said you will eventually make it your own with the help of items from the supporting vendors here. Some of it has to do with where you live and if it will see winter duty. Traction control which was added to the 04's for some of the decontented items on 03's is nice but not necessary in the southern states that don't see much snow. I would like to have had the indash clock and the remote gas door. The main thing you have to do is get the base to start with.
Get one that best suits your price and if you find one you're interested in pm the VIN to ROyLPITA (a member here) for OASIs report and you'll get an idea how it was maintained.
I will have had mine 2 yrs the 3rd of January and it is the best car i've had to date.

Definitely a keeper.
Good luck,

Waymon in St. Louie Mo

300A vs 300B (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=31102&highlight=300a+300b) pretty good desc.

Most who've gone w/ different gears have gone w/ 4.10's. Many of our supporting vendors provide their tuners w/ 3.55 & 4.10 tunes out of the box, in fact. I have startd seeing some guys going higher over the past 6months or so. Just have to search around.

Have to throw this link in here (http://www.edmunds.com/townhall/chat/transcripts/mercmarauderchattranscript0606 02.html) old interview w/ PM Steve Babcock
Also take advantage of Steve's recent appearance (http://www.motorcitymarauders.com/forums/member.php?u=239) on MotorCity Marauder forums

Oh... yeah... bump bump...

Yeah I'm not to fond of oreo's, decent snack, but not a chocolate fan.

I think I'll look for an early 03, traction control isn't much of a concern of mine. I've been driving rear wheel drive cars in the snow for almost 8 years, both manuals and automatics. I've learned the that the tires make the biggest difference. After driving on true winter tires in my SC about 3 years ago, I've never chanced it since. I put my snow tires on the car around Thanksgiving and they will stay on till spring when I put my cobra r wheels back on.

If I am still up north when I get my Marauder I will just get some P71 steelies and some Winterforce tires from tire rack. I run the Winterforce 225/60/16's on my SC in the winter and I can go places I used to only be able to go in my Audi.

I was thinking of getting an Audi A6 2.7t (twin turbo) or the Marauder, but since it's easier (and cheaper) to modify domestic cars, plus I'm a die hard Ford guy, I have to go with the Marauder.

I've never been one to get a mainstream car (camaro, mustang, or dare I say Civic/Integra), I like to stick out from the crowd and have a unique car. That's why I drive an SC. Tons of mustangs and camaro's around. Nice cars, but I'm 6'2" and I prefer a full size car, but it's gotta have power to move when I put my foot in it. So the Marauder sounds like it fits the bill.

I really want to get an 87 Grand National, but I need a car I can drive everyday and I just don't think I'd trust a GN as a daily driver. As a toy, yeah maybe someday when I have the garage space. I am only 24 and most of my old friends drive imports, but I hate those things, raspy exhaust, stickers all over, big wings, etc.... I like a big black muscle car and it's also good to go unnoticed by the police. I bet with the P71 wheels people will slow down when they see me getting on the highway.

Thanks for the replies and advice, keep it coming. I'll be sure to post pics and let you all know when I finally get the keys to my own Marauder.

Welcome aboard. Feel free to PM me with the VIN (or VINS) so I can run them through Ford's OASIS database. This is just a little "piece of mind" that I offer here to my fellow friends and members.

Thanks again.

I saw one for $5900 in the Michigan Auto/RV weekly that looks like it would be a ton of work. Too bad I don't own a body shop.
