I had the rear end rebuilt today. Here is what we found out at the axle ends (as I suspected) These have 35K on them, 08/02 build date.

I know, thats why I gave the shop new axles and diff to install, along with a ring gear and all bearings/seals. I could tell they were history when I dumped the gear lube a cupl weeks ago, lots O metal in it. Its out of warranty unfortunately but it was a good excuse to install the 31's :D

A good example of why the manufacturers take the stance they do on these issues...instead of doing the right thing and recalling the vehicle.

recalls are for safety issues only. not just any manufacturer defect....if they were every auto manufacturer would probably have a ton of recalls on every model!

and I would have more money in my bank account tonight....

Call it what you want, I wouldnt advocate a "recall" for any defect however intermittent but we are talking about a well documented, KNOWN issue that they could step to the plate and take care of. As it was they figured you know what? We will fix em if they show up during the warranty, if not, the owner can eat it 3 months later and 1000 miles UNDER the warranty mileage. Its a matter of money...mine.

Anyway, the point of this post was to show the condition to those that might be aware of the issue but havent seen its result, not the merits of Fords warranty policy.

i agree with you! your dealer could have helped you at their discretion with an aft warranty adjustment....but for some reason they didnt. this axle problem is common as far as we are concerned...but if you figure how many cvs and gms there are built within that time period...im sure it is only a small percentage with the problem. i have only seen a handful myself at the dealer. it seems alot of people think that every "quirk" or common problem with a car should become a recall....it doesnt work that way...imo its the dealer you should have a problem with.....they could have helped you...you say its money out of your pocket...but if ford ate every problem that was "just out of waranty" thats money out of their pocket...theyd be bankrupt. didnt mean to get off topic....great pics!!

Do we know of anyone who did have the TSB performed
yet still had axle bearings fail later?

I was fortunately to have a really bad axle bearing make alot of noise over a year ago. The entire axles and bearings were replace with the Ford TSB replacement kit. No charge under warranty.
