View Full Version : Fix it or Primer it???
My Marauder has some serious paint issues I didnt know about until I was paying for it. There is some chemical that has eaten itself into the clearcoat, and pretty deep at that. The entire passenger side as well as the rear bumper and a portion of the deck lid is affected.
I spent 1 hour today trying to save one half of the lower portion of the passenger door. I got it to look really good but body work is just not my deal. Im stuck now because I cant sell it in its current condition. I looked long and hard at the paint when I bought it thinking it would be an easy fix, but I was wrong! I need to put weeks of time into it, or prime it black and keep it!
Can someone please take a good Marauder pic with multiple angles and photoshop it for me. I like the idea of 'old school' muscle car look on a newer car.
Fire away and respond to the poll please!

I too would like to see how a Marauder will look primed black. As the 80's saying goes, might be "baaaaad to the bone".

There is a paint that gives the flat look. They used it on Trucks!. Primer left alone will actually speed up the rusting process by allowing moisture in and holding it. It needs a surface coat.

Agreed Rich, but remember, I would be lightly sanding the clearcoat, then applying the primer over it.
its not going to be primer over bare metal.

If there is still clear coat left bring it to a detailer for consultation.
I would not paint it flat black.
If you are looking to sell it you have just eliminated 95% of the market.
A friend had a green Dodge p/u. After a year he told me he was going to paint it blue. I told him not to, another year and he tries to trade it in.
No one would take it. Took him 2 months to find a used car lot that would take it.
People assumed something was wrong and would not touch it.
Peolpe will assumed something major is wrong, stolen, metal is crumbling etc.

Zack, I would get w/ Jason (Rider90). Maybe he could have some ideas to repair the damage?

PS - I would repaint is the Factory Color if you are planning on selling it ;)

I did not read that correctly, sorry. I'd see what someone with a buffer and experience could do for it.

Zack, have you got one of those Porter Cable/Meguiars buffers available? With a high cut cleaner and one of those machines you can clean it right up. BTW, is it an '03A or B? It seams there were many threads about the black paint on some of 'em. Also, Jim Kelly is the absolute team expert on the paint issues, and what to do about it/them.
He's, sort of the Overlord of paint.:D

I saw that episode, and I like that color. On that truck though....it just looked like a REALLY nice flat paint job. I think it would have fit better if they would have done it with a spray can :D

I wouldn't paint it flat black.
If you want 'real' old school hot rod look paint it with red oxide primer.
But as I said, don't do it! Work out the clear coat, and if necessary/possible have it re-clear coated.

Zack:
Wet sand the entrie car and then buff it out. Wet sand will do a great deal to clear up the problems.

Hi Zack,
Along the lines of the Porter cable buffer, You can use Mirka 4000GT Abralon with the same backup pad. This color sanding works GREAT. Then a cutting compound. I start with 2000GT and then move to 4000GT. After using 4000GT sometimes you won't need to cut the clear coat. You'll only need a yellow or Black foam pad with swirl free or the new Meguairs #M8332 This product can cut and finish just use different pads.
Cheers, Terry

If you are going to paint it flat black...paint it with the 'STEALTH' microwave absorbing flat black paint....wave "Bye Bye" to speed traps...heh heh heh.....:D
P.S. I know...I know....the stuff is like $2,000 a gallon.

If you are thinking of keeping it, flat black with red scallops or old-skool red-yellow flames. Then black steelies with chrome domes and red trim rings.
If your gonna go old skool, go all the way! Don't forget the flame thrower exhaust tips!
I've had some good luck with Duplicolor clear for small touch ups. I have done entire panels with it. I'm sure you know what you're doing, but consider: taping off entire panel, light sand with 600, appication of Duplicolor clear, 1 day dry, check for match of next panel, buff if needed.
Had to do an entire door on my custom painted van and you couldn't see a difference.

I got FORD to help with mine. It is going to cost me 200 and they are going to paint the top of the car (trunk, roof and hood).

LineX or herculiner and a roller and do it yourself.
Clean it up and coat it below the door trim.
Tough and practical.

Update:
I wet sanded the entire car last night with 2500 grit.
I got a hold of a Dewalt variable speed polisher with foam pads.
The only thing Im in question of is the compound?
Do I need it? Can a cleaner wax do the same thing?
Please advise!

Hey Zack, go to www.griotsgarage.com (http://www.griotsgarage.com) I use all of their products and they are first rate. Start with thier polish, they have four different grades and then finish up with the wax. Let me know if you have any questions. Even though corporate is in Washington the product gets shipped out of Indiana so I get everything the next business day.

Never done it before to boot!
What do I have to lose, bad paint?
I would not have bought the car, even at the good price had the previous owner disclosed the awful condition it was in.

There was a guy around campus back in my college days that did an entire AMC Gremlin in black astroturf.
Its going well so far.
I have the roof, hood and trunk done.
Step 1 is an abrasive foam pad used with cleaner wax.
Step 2 is a super fine foam pad used with polish.
Step 3 is waxing by hand.
I guess it will be a really nice car afterall.
Any takers?

Sure! I'll give you $30.00 for it! You MUST deliver it, and it must have a full tank of Sunoco 94 when I take posession.
So.....when's it gonna be here?

I dont have those kind of tools to measure that, but I did not remove much.
Just removed the uppermost layer tainted with crud.
Im almost done.
The paint is really nice now.
The drivers and rear drivers side door, along with one of the quarter panels needs a bit more work, but it will be done tomorrow.
This is becoming a labor of love and its gonna be hard to let this one go.
Pics tomorrow.

So it never crossed your mind that you have every right to back out of a deal if the car is unsatisfactory when you go to pay for it and see it in person?

Agreed 100%
once you buy plane tickets, spend the whole day flying around, wait an hour at the airport to be picked up etc, suddenly the big stuff seems small.
I have the paint fixed now so all is well.
Besides, it was a saturday and I doubt my deposit check of a grand would have been available right then.
