I just got a suspicious Email, supposedly from PayPal wanting to know if I made a $600+ purchase. I did not respond to the Email, but contacted their security center and did a cut & paste of the Email. The message looked legitimate in every way.

Also had a fradulant charge on my Visa card, for a Western Union payment to East Bumfork, MI, that one was ~ $600 they called to verify, then sent me a new card. Be careful.

A couple months ago, someone opened a PayPal account in my wife's name. She does not use PayPal. In fact, she doesn't even use the computer.

She received a letter from GE Money Bank -- PayPal Services that included her "membership card" and a notice that someone may have fraudulently made a purchase. When we called the "Fraud Hotline" number in the letter, we were told that phone number was incorrect and were bounced around to several different numbers. Each one seemed to be "phishing" for more personal data which we would not provide except for the member account number. I suspect it all was some kind of hoax to have us mail in the payment.

Sure enough, in about 7 days, she received a bill for $950.00 for a purchase in California. We contested the bill in writing. Notified all of the credit agencies to attach a fraud alert on her credit reports and filed an identity theft report with our local police for follow-up investigation. So far, so good ... but it does make you very uncomfortable that someone is able to do this.

ID thiefs are about the lowest form of life on the planet. :mad2: And it seems to be getting worse every day with people looking for free and easy money --- from someone else. :nono: Bastages oughta burn. :fire:

In some cases, we have no one but ourselvs to blame, for not protecting our's and our friend's email addresses. How many emails do you get with what looks like a telephone address book of recipient's email addresses published for all the world to see? There is no reason to ever publish a third party's email address when copying a message to multiple recipients. BCC should always be used when the message is sent to multiple recipients, IMHO.
I'm in the process of changing my email address as we speak, and will be careful about who get's it in the future. How many of us have our email addresses published in our profile section on this and other forum's; for anyone to see? :alone:

WE just had our store CC TURN UP IN THE PHILLIPINES! They must have made a bogus card as they used it at a Starbucks along with many other places. I have no idea how they got the number.

Any and All emails from Paypal (assuming you have an account) will come to you addressing you by your first and last names. Bogus paypal emails will come addressing you as "Paypal member" or something like that.

All, the ONE BEST WAY to see if it's a scam is to check the hyperlinks. Scroll over that "CANCEL TRANSACTION!" Link above and see what address shows up in the bottom of your browser. (Don't click it, just roll over it)

It leads to here: http://www.seet-environnement.com/~tourelec/radik.php
(I wouldn't click that link, BTW, and to be safe I removed it as a hyperlink, just text now)

NOT a paypal site.

Many times PayPal phishing emails will have links that go to an ip address with a /paypal.com/ subfolder to trick you.

Such a link might look like this:

http://192.168.1.100/paypal.com/confirmaccount.asp

Note you see paypal.com, but the true server you are going to is the root folder, or IP address there. (That's a private range, so it won't really go anywhere unless ofcourse you are running a paypal fake site on your local LAN!)

So, most of these emails are scams, check the links very carefully before clicking.

Always log into PayPal and Ebay directly. Any messages they sent you will be waiting for you there in your messages bin.
Log in "securely" on their sites only!

Forward these bogus emails, or any emails you SUSPECT may be bogus on either Ebay or Paypal to these respective email addresses:

just forward the suspicious emails to:

spoof@ebay.com

spoof@paypal.com

They will let you know, usually within an hour, whether the email was bogus or not. Of all the emails i've forwarded them over the last couple of years, none have been legit.

Many people give out personal info far too freely, such as their Drivers license number, SSN, telephone number, address.
I see it all the time when buying something at a store, the clerk will ask for this information, and people just recite it without thinking. None of these places need any of that info. If they refuse to sell you something because you won't give it, it is their loss.

/\ That's exactly right. If you send notice any other way they will ignore it, so make note of those email addresses!

My checking acct was hit for almost $1000 two months ago... I used my debit card at a japanese restaurant and 2 days later I had charges made in Japan. My bank told me that it was not a keyed transaction but an actual card swipe. They burned my card info into a fake... My bank asked if I had been to Japan... I had not. They said there are new pocket machines that can swipe and contain your card info... They then download it and e-mail the files overseas to be reprinted and burned onto a fake card... It was a pain in the ass.
