1998 Mustang motor swap

I have a friend that has a 1998 Mustang V6 Auto and wants to do a motor swap to a 4.6 sohc/dohc and stay with the automatic. He won't have to pay for labor because his uncle owns a mechanic shop and as long as my friend helps out the labor will be free. What would be the best route for him to take? I've told him to find a wrecked 96-98 GT or Cobra and turn it into a donor car since motor swaps are not my specialty. Any input would :help:.

I think a wrecked donor is the best bet. Keeping them side-by-side when doing the work, makes it easier.

I'd imagine a donor is the best. You'll need plenty of parts from the donor. I'm betting you'll have to replace the k-member, GT brakes may be upgraded, and does the 98 V6 still have a 7.5 rear? That'll have to go for the GT's 8.8 if so - even a stock 4.6 will tear up a weak 7.5. You'll need the PCM, harness, and misc parts, etc.

A donor is really the best way to go.

Some may argue the work isn't worth doing, if the car runs well it may not cost much more to sell it and buy a '98 GT...but I know there are plenty of other reasons to do it! :) But that could be a possible option to consider.

Yea, def a wrecked donor car. Although, if you look carefully on eBay once in a while you'll see some 'Stang engines.

search some of the Mustang sites as this topic has been specifically addressed (V8-V6 swap) before.
Do the v6's use the 4r70w?

As far as I can remember pretty much all the automatic rwd ford cars used the 4r70w that had a 3.8 v6 or 4.6l v8 sohc/dohc in the 90's.

Might be better to find a wrecked 99+ GT with PI heads. The major difference would be the fuel system.

Also factor in PATS, if the car has it you'll need the ECU and ignition.
