View Full Version : Need a TSB report for my 1994 LINCOLN TOWN CAR

I am in need of assistance from some one with access to Ford TSB bulletins. I have an account with mycarstats.com but they do not tell you what the fix is for my problem. It tells me that there are several tsb's out for this problem.
OK here is the deal. I had a problem with my check engine light coming on. It was found to be my egr valve. They replaced the valve but had to flash the computer to get the engine light to stop coming on. OK that problem fixed.
NOW the car has a shudder on light acceleration above 38mph and between the 3rd and 4th shift. I know there are several bulletins on this but I need to know what they consider the fix. I think when they flashed the computer they might have put in an older program that has caused this problem. Here are some of the tsb #'s I got about the problem but again I need the whole report:SERVICE BULLETIN:BC0810961011 - SERVICE BULLETIN:962517-
SERVICE BULLETIN:9887
If any one could assist with a full copy of these bulletins I would be very happy. I need to know if it is related to the computer to know if when they flashed it they screwed it up.
I had this problem before when the car was my fathers and my brother-in-law at the time had a repairs shop and he fixed it. Unfortunately he is now my EX Brother-in-law and I have no way of finding out what he did.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :help:
Disconnect the egr and the problem will go away.
Simply pull the vacuum line and plug it.
It is not worth the diagnosing to fix it.
An egr valve will get you an extra .002 miles to the gallon, big whoopie.

The egr problem was fixed. That is not the issue. When they flashed the computer for the egr check engine light they caused the torque converter shudder problem I'm having now. It is the shudder I need the answer to not the egr valve. I was just trying to give all the facts as to how the shudder problem occured

Yeah it sounds like either a TC shudder or a borderline coil-on-plug.
Unfortunately a coil on plug that is only missing slightly under load can cause this and not throw a code. They can be tough to diagnose, I do have an idea that invovles a MacGyver setup of a big oscilliscope, DC-to-AC inverter and some extra long test probes, but that's only theoretical at this point. ;)
My friend has a '98 TC that had the same symptoms. He thought it was TC shudder and had the trans serviced. The issue didn't go away. Finally after a while later he FINALLY got a code for a miss in one of the cylinders. Replaced that COP and the problem went away.

In 94 they didnt have coil on plug. They used 2 seperate coil packs that sat in front of each valve cover and connected to the plugs with traditional wires. I know the feeling of a bad coil thanks to my moms continental but i think in this case it would cause one hell of a shudder if it is actually the coil because it sends spark to half the engine..

Vehicles equipped with an AODE or 4R70W transmission (refer to Vehicle Application Chart) may experience a torque converter clutch shudder or vibration. This occurs under light to moderate acceleration above 56 km/h (35 mph) while in 3rd or 4th gear or on 3-4/4-3 shifts. This may be due to temperature related automatic transmission fluid breakdown.
ACTION:
Perform normal diagnostics and refer to the following Service Procedure for required service.

Perform Steps 1-6 and 8-10 for vehicles that are not normally operated in stop-and-go traffic, areas of high ambient temperatures and humidity or the previously listed states. If you have questions regarding the vehicle operating parameters, call the Transmission Hotline.
Perform normal diagnosis and repair of all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) prior to continuing with the following Steps.
Verify concern. Torque converter shudder occurs during 3rd or 4th gear under light to moderate acceleration. If vibration or shudder occurs only in 1st or 2nd gear, or when brakes are applied, then it is not torque converter shudder.

ISSUE:
Torque converter clutch shudder or vibration may occur under light to moderate acceleration above 56 km/h (35 mph) while in 3rd or 4th gear or on 3-4/4-3 shifts. This condition may be more noticeable on higher mileage vehicles (24,000+ km (15,000+ mi)) when the torque converter clutch engages or disengages on light to moderate acceleration.
ACTION:
Perform normal diagnostics and change the transmission fluid. Changing the transmission fluid should reduce the possibility of shudder/vibration. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Drain all transmission fluid including the torque converter. Completely drain the cooler and cooler lines. Refer to the appropriate model/year Service Manual, Section 07-01, for more details.
<TABLE border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width=80>NOTE:</TD><TD>IF TORQUE CONVERTER SHUDDER OCCURS BELOW 11,250 km (7,000 MILES) OR ABOVE 32,000 km (20,000 MILES), THE CONCERN IS DUE TO AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID CONTAMINATION AND/OR BREAKDOWN. PROCEED TO STEP 7.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width=80>NOTE:</TD><TD>IF TORQUE CONVERTER SHUDDER OCCURS BETWEEN 11,250 km (7,000 MILES) AND 32,000 km (20,000 MILES), THE CONVERTER MAY BE AT FAULT. PROCEED TO STEP 2.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Remove the transmission and replace the torque converter.
Remove the transmission pan and clean the pan and magnet.
Inspect the transmission gasket and filter. Reuse the pan gasket and filter if they are not damaged.
Reinstall the transmission filter, pan gasket and pan.
Reinstall the transmission.
Verify that bulk fluid does not have moisture contamination. If suspected, use quart containers of MERCONŽ. Refill transmission with the proper amount of Motorcraft MERCONŽ Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) (XT-2-QDX).

disconnect the egr valve and that car will ping into oblivion! the egr valve is not there for fuel mileage..its there for cooling of the combustion chambers at part throttle which in turn reduces nox emissions. besides it sounds like you got either a convertor shudder or a misfire.
