Check this out. Watch the video on the site. I know I'll be checking back when they dig this puppy back up. Very interesting.

I remember this event being written-up in the "Weekly Reader" kids school newspaper back in fifties and thinking back then where (or if?) I might be when they finally dug it up. My parents had just acquired a new station wagon version of that car (a Plymouth Custom Suburban/push button trans) about this same time. Don't know how the buried one held-up but our wagon was a notorious ruster and by 1960 had rusted out behind the headlights on both sides and around all the lower fenders and rocker panels. It also leaked like a sieve when it rained. That car was my parents' (ardent Mopar buyers) last Chrysler product. Have read someplace that most of the 57-59 Mopars were serious rusters related to their extreme (for the time) body sculpting/contours and quality control issues due to rushing to get the styling out ahead of FoMoCo and GM ??. :)

So what do you think that will bring at next year's Barrett-Jackson?

That is cool. Back then they probably expected things to progress significantly faster then they have.

I like this statement:

According to event chairman Lewis Roberts Jr., the Plymouth was chosen because it was "an advanced product of American industrial ingenuity with the kind of lasting appeal that will still be in style 50 years from now."

While it may not be in style anymore, the appeal is still there. That car would turn all heads driving down the road.

How do they decide who gets it? I hope there's a raffle, 'cause I'll buy a couple of tickets. :)

The video voiceover and music are much more recent. Why did they choose music from the 1940's?

I like this

They couldn't have picked a worse car. They were terrible, and only became worse.
If that Plymouth is a six, it will be an old even for 1957, flathead design.

For 1957, Fords were all new, unlike Plymouth and Chevrolet, and a much better car.

I suppose the Plymouth was free.

From the Tulsa World I read on Sunday
The person who gets it is chosen by a contest that was held at the time. The person who guessed the closest to the census count of the population of Tulsa in 2007 gets the car. If they aren't alive, their closest relatives get it. If there are no relatives found the Tulsa Historical Society gets the car.
Regardless of a winner announced, the Historical Society gets a whitewall for a museum display or something.

here's the Tulsa World article

We should have a man on the scene for an MM.net perspective!

I'm also interested to see what it looks like when it's brought up, but I too am afraid it will be riddled with rust...

This is a pic from the Tulsa World of the burial... er... entombment? I'm curious what those buckets of 'D X' are. Is it some coating they put on the car or in the enclosure or what? What is it? ack!

I can’t wait to see that car raised up also.:) I hope it’s in good shape because there isn’t too many left.:( Chrysler Corp in those days did not put any rust protection on the car’s metal, so where there wasn’t any paint it rusted and badly.:depress: Hopefully water has stayed out of the vault and the car will be in good shape. I love that design with the big fins.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p> </o:p>
Also there was no flat heads in the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1:place>Plymouth</st1:place></st1:City> line at that time. Looking at the cover that they had on the engine bay, it looks like a single carb set up on a 318.

If it's a V8, no it won't be a flat head, but the sixes were, until the early '60s.

Oh, the V8 would probably be a 301, not a 318, which came much later

It could be a 301 but the Poly A engine had a few different sizes. The Poly 318 was introduced in 1957, it came with a single or double carb set up. Hard to believe a 318 as the performance engine..

The side chart is from the allpar.com web page
