A few weeks ago a skunk took up residence under my house. I came home late one night just in time to see him[him?] make a mad dash across the yard and through one of the vents . I have a have-a -heart trap but have had no luck until tonight. I did some reading and changed bait from sardines to peanut butter! Came home tonight and I had him! Now I have to figure out how to get rid of him! And do they live alone? I don't want to close up the vent until I know he wasn't running a boarding house under there. Anyone have any expert advice on Skunks?:alone:

...I've never been sprayed by a skunk. Just cover the trap with a blanket or cardboard and put it in your trunk. Take it to a appropriate drop off area and open the trap. He/she will walk out and away.

You gotta drive the little vermon at least 10 miles away
or else he is gonna find his way back to your house.

Take him to the airport, and check him in, they'll surely loose your luggage.
Seriously, call your animal control folks to dispose of the critter, as there's always a chance of rabies. Keep the trap in service, though, because of the suspected house mates.

Where there is one skunk there are more. Take Mike's advice and call animal control, let them get sprayed, that's what they're paid for. By your taxes no less.

The animal control officers here won't deal with wild animals. As mentioned.... be very careful, you don't want ot get rabies.

How to dispose of a skunk:

Add said skunk to a 50 Gallon Trash can.

Insert water hose into said can.

Firmly attatch lid, and secure.

Turn on water.

1 Hour later....no more skunk.

...that's why you cover the cage with cardboard or a blanket. I use the cardboard, folded underneath the cage, and wrapped around the rest. They won't spray in an enclosed area. I used to carry them in the back of my Jeep CJ-5. Now use the trunk of Gran Marquis.

They get a bad rap, like bats. They eat mice, rats, insects.

Open the door of the cage and prod him out with a stick. Yell loudly while doing this.

Cut up into small serving pieces.
Put a soup kettle on the stove and add the meat.
Cover with cold water and bring to a boil over high heat.
Lower the heat and boil until the meat is tender, about 40 minutes.
Remove all the scum that rises to the surface.
Make a batter by mixing together the egg yolks, milk, flour, salt and baking powder.
Mix real good until the batter is about like cake batter.
Heat the bear fat or lard in a deep fryer to about 360 degrees.
Dip the pieces of skunk in the batter and then fry them in the deep fryer until golden brown.

Actually liquid douche works better than tomato juice. My brother had 2 cocker spaniels that had a close encounter of the funky kind with a skunk. Of course rhey smelled like a tossed salad for a couple of weeks  Next time he is going to use a different flavor errr, scent :)

...I was leaving for work one morning and there was a strong skunk smell around the house.

My neighbor came over with his dog the next day. We were in my living room talking, and my Seal-point Siamese came in to see Jeff and his dog. The dog saw the cat and started shaking! Turns out, he lets his dog out every morning, the dog does his business, and comes in before Jeff leaves for work.

Well, the prior morning, the smell was so bad, he didn't realize the dog had been sprayed. His wife and son had already left before he let the dog in, so the dog was in the house all day, smelling the place up! The sight of my Siamese put the fear of God in his dog.

Dog and house cleaned up nicely.

Oh yeah, Barb just reminded me that when shot, skunks always, um, evacuate every last drop of stinky stuff in their arsenal for the world to enjoy. Fortunately, I was up-wind from the first, and last, one of the critters I dispatched. Sadly, Mr. Skunk was up-wind from the house when the event took place. Hence Barbara's fine recollection of the incident. Um, did I mention it was summer, and the windows were open?
