The whole purpose of a flywheel is to store energy in between power strokes, so it has to be properly sized to the motor. Reducing its weight might make the engine spool up faster, but may also create undesirable vibrations.

Our cars don't actually have a flywheel per se; they have a "flex-plate" which is basically just a lightweight disc that has teeth around the cir¢umference that are used by the starter to turn the engine over, and is also a place to bolt the torque converter to. Together they act like the flywheel in a manual transmission car.
