Noticed the letters M S written on the front of the engine block in black marker ?
Can anyone shed some light on what this
designates?

I've got some stuff written in marker on my engine as well. There was a thread some time ago with a post from a line worker saying sometimes it means somethin...sometimes they write stuff to be seen by their buddies down the line.

Think its Romeo Engine plant code not an actual but what they use in the factory to distinguish from Mach and Marauder blocks and so forth. But you have the exact same built date so it might be a build date code to.

Our engines have stickers and labels in a number of places easy to see. Along the underside of each valve cover, and on the front of the block near where these "initials" can be seen. The stickers have build dates, part numbers, and engine serial numbers on them. I think the hand written symbols are "inspected by" signatures.
I'd also like to add that the "cast vs. forged" crank issue between the Mach 1 and the MM is unsupported urban legend. It may have been printed in a car mag somewhere, but I've been talking with and learning from experts in the field for over a year now, and not one wrench who actually works on these cars has ever mentioned the crank while discussing the difference. I think it's BS, the only difference between the Mach and MM engines, is the flipped intake, which accounts for the 3 HP and 2 FtLb TQ gain.
IMHO...

SergntMac:
I'm glad you weighed in on the crank issue. The other thread has only opinion, I wanted to hear from someone who actually knows. I cannot imagine Ford having two different shortblocks for these cars, since steel cranks are in the truck series.
I do have a new 99 Cobra shortblock, that I think I'll keep.
And I know the Car Mags are not always right. I personnaly have experienced some errors in the MM&FF Modular articles of a few mionths back, they are a great source for data, however.
Cheers

While perusing the MPS website (www.stangparts.com), I noticed that the photos they have of the MM engines for sale have 6 bolt flexplates (flywheels), indicative of cast crank!!
