...Has anyone found this to be useful? I've added my number three times, because the calls keep on coming.

Marginal if at all. When you do get calls, you need to explicitly tell them to put you on THEIR company "do not call" list. Otherwise, they can legally claim a "prior business relationship" with you even just from prior calls. Its a loophole in the law big enough to drive a freight train through.

It doesn't stop the supposedly "legitimate" charities from calling, i. e., heart, cancer, Easter Seals, law enforcement agencies and the like.

It takes about three months to become full activited. I have put our phone number on it and have received no telemarket calls for the past 6 months or so. :banned:

Same here...I put my name on it the first week it was available...I rarely get telemarketers calling me anymore, when I used to get 2-3 an evening!:mad2:

Mine worked like a charm - I rarely if ever get a call from someone who thinks I am their customer. Of course, I use only a cell. My wife ported our land line # to her cell when we got rid of Qwest and she had some trouble with people who felt they had a "prior business relationship."
There was an article on cnn or msnbc yesterday about a guy who sues telemarketers and their companies for making calls after being told not to, and apparently he's pretty good at it.
Can't seem to find that article today though.
Same here, called to be put on the Do Not Call List and very rarely do I get any calls form telemarketers. I even put my cell number on the Do Not Call List.

Cells do not apply to the do not call list, they are not published numbers.

The FTC sold the Do Not Call List to the telemarketers association. It raised a lot of money.

Yes, they do.
You run far less risk of telemarketers *because* cell #s are unpublished, but this will not stop telemarketers.
The first time you have to enter your phone # online for anything for a company that sells their lists (and many do), the calls will begin. Put your cell # on the list before you have to do this.
I have received telemarketing calls on my cell, though rarely. Once I tell them this # is on the list, they stop.

Have you telephone company block all ANONYMOUS calls.
They have to dial *82 or leave a message in order to get through.
I have had that in place for more than 5 years.
Now I have it turned off and I haven't had a single call in almost a year.

You're right . . .
However, that's not what I was referring to. That snopes reference is about publishing all cell numbers. I'm speaking of people contacting you in other ways.
Eventually, if you use your cell # as a contact # for online transactions, your number will be sold. For many, we only have the one number, so it's worth the 7 seconds it takes to put yourself on the list.

I have four cells with Alltel and one with T-mobile. I got a text from 'fraternaldeal.net' offering me cheap meds. I told Alltel that I will tolerate one more text. I pay for minutes and texts and I am not buying advertising. I went on the fraternal website and TRIED to contact them but they wanted a phone number and email address filled out. I gave a '555' phone number and I got a "junk" email address from hotmail strictly for spam and have not heard a word back from them. The world is bending people over and everybody else is micro-managing us.

My wife and I turned off text messaging completely on our service. I don't see why either of us would ever need it.
Text messaging is on the short list of "the dumbest things in the world" to spend money for, IMO.
Jay Leno put several kids across the stage from two guys doing morse code. He gave them each a message comprised of about two lines of text. The morse code guys were done before the texters were halfway through.
And people *pay* for this?
We have students trying to write papers in textspeak now. They get upset when they receive no credit.

I've received significantly fewer telemarketing calls since being on the list.
In fact I now rarely get any.
Still get the political candidate calls though which are just as annoying.
