View Full Version : List your top five Muscle Cars...

Constable

I just read Spider's thread on this years top five muscle cars. Got me thinking of what may be the baddest muscle cars ever built. So here's what will be our rule of thumb for car selection:

Must seat at least four people (doesn't need to be comfortable)
Must have a usable storage area (trunk or hatch)
Must be rear wheel drive.
Must be a normal production car (no one-off's)
No model year limitations.

So... post your picks for the five baddest rides to roll off the assembly lines. And remember, these are only our top fives *personal* picks, so lets play nice...

I'm pleased to see someone had the nutz to throw in the Thunderbird SuperCoupe... it's a forgotten performer with big potential. And, i didn't think about it before, but the 575 Maranello actually fits into the guidelines!

Suprised that I haven't seen ANY Trans Ams....
98-02 Trans Am/Formula WS6 6 speed
77-78 Bandit Trans Am (403/4 speed)
1989 Indy Pace Car Trans Am (turbo 6)
The 455 SUPER DUTY 4 SPEED!!!

Don't have a top 5. Once you go to number 3 or 4, it's kind of a "pick 'em".

But if I had the chance to get a number 1 or number 2, I'd go for (1) the 1969 Cyclone CJ428 (maybe not the fastest musclecar, but it looked like no other car, except for it's twin, the Torino) or my number 2 choice, the 1970 Cyclone Spoiler CJ 429 with the canted gauges spread out across the dash and the gunsight grille.

Either car would have to be the bright orange color.

I couldn't stop kicking myself after buying a 1968 Cyclone GT fastback and then seeing a bright orange CJ 428 in the Ford plant parking lot where I worked.

In the late 60's, Mercury was the sponsor for the New York Knicks. For publicity, they rounded up 50 Cyclone fastbacks, half yellow, half orange, parked them in the Ford Parts Depot parking lot in Teterboro, NJ, and then drove them over NY to circle Madison Square Garden. Quite a parade.

Also saw one of the first 66 Mustang 2+2s parked overnight in the warehouse, and a very early Ford mid engined sporstcar, the Pantera, with the 351 Cleveland motor.

If I had to choose a number 3, it would be a 1967 442 or GTO in the dark blue/green. (Never cared much for the General Motor mid size styling after 1967.)

These don't really count but, once had a 72 Cadillac Coupe Deville and a 70 Coupe Deville. Both blew the doors off of a few camaros on open road. All time favorite 65 GTO.

1) Buick Grand National / Riveria
2) Mustang GT 550
3) Late 60's / Early 70's Camaro SS
4) 68 Plymouth GTX Hemi
5) Late 70's Chev Laguna S3

I loved the GN for the same reasons I like my MM, just I couldn't afford one in High School.

The 'stang is just just just...beautiful! I loved the look of the 69-71 Camaros, with that pointy pedestrian unfriendly front end...and I know a guy who still has a GTX hemi convertable. He also had the S3, which most people wouldn't have heard about. Kinda like our MM

OK

1 1964 442 Cutlass the other Muscle car that a lot of people over look because of the 64 GTO.

2 1969 1/2 Charger Daytona 426 with 4 spd

3 1984 T- type 3.8 Turbo as the GN was to flashy

4 2003 Cobra SVT Mustang

5 99-2003 SVT F150 Lightning. Yes its a truck but it goes with the best of them and then some.

Question for you BlackHole: this is not a flame but I'm interested to know why you'd prefer an 84 T-Type to a later model, such as an 86 or 87. I believe the 84 and 85's were "hot air" cars that were running without intercoolers. The 86 and 87's had all the best parts with none of the GN flash. Is it a matter of collectability? Were there less 84 T-Types produced than other years?

Technically speaking, I think most people agree that Vipers and Cobras are not musclecars. They are sports cars. Actually, I would also place Mustangs and Camaros in the sports car group rather than the musclecar.

Musclecars were normal use cars, sedans, wagons etc that had grossly unecessary amounts of power under the hood during the beautiful heyday of displacement in the 60s to 71.

That is true, but for the purposes of this thread, the Mustangs/Cobras and Camaros do have usable storage areas and have the ability to seat four (however not too comfortably).

Vipers, Shelby Cobras, Corvettes, etc... don't fit this bill.

Assuming my memory isn't totally shot (which would not surprise me in the least), wasn't the biggest 62 Chevy motor the 409? And wasn't the biggest 63 Ford the 406?

I think Ford replaced the 406 with the 427 in 1964.

Loved that 62 BelAir coupe. 61 roofline on a 62 body. Gorgeous.

You are partially correct. The Chevrolet Z-11 engine(427 W-Block) became an option in 1963. Don Nicholson raced a 1962 Bel Air Coupe with the 427(W-Block) in Factory Stock class, enough were built to qualify in NHRA. 1963 had the W-Block 427 and Rat Motor 427.

1963 Ford Galaxie "Q" code(427 4V), "R" code(427 8V)ID plates (http://www.thecarsource.com/fords/engines/427engine.html)

If you look at my list all but the Lightning was first year for that piticular SP? model. So yes for collectability sakes and I really think GM went to far with the GN in production #'s.

Constable

ah... i see now. Thanks. BUT (just for conversational purposes), wasn't the first year of the T-Type 1983? 3,732 were produced and the GN wasn't available that year. 1984 saw 2,238 T-Types and the rebirth of the GN. 1985 saw the lowest T-Type production at 1,575 units. And YES, I do agree that GM went nuts with GN production in 1987 (20,193 cars!!).

It's very well possible that I may be misinformed about the first year of the T-Type, so I just want to know for my own personal knowledge. Thanks
