Old C6 Transmission - what fluid?

What ATF fluid should be used in an old C6 trans (specifically from a '65)?

i always used type-f in my race prepped c6. gives a snappier shift than mercon....anything you need to know about the c6 i can probably tell ya!!!

I always used Type-F in my 70 TBird with a C6. It was never touched in over 200K miles. Bulletproof.

as correctly stated, Type F only. dextron will erode your clutches rapidly.

you can also use the non-synthetic trick shift from B&M
it works great in a c-6.

ford transmissions after 77 can use dextron, but actually work better and cooler with type F, as do GM transmissions as well.
you cant use Type F in electric-controlled transmissions I'm told however.

the odd thing is the pre-'type F fluid' transmissions used 'Type A fluid' and they do not work well with type F. Dextron is the supposed equivalent/replacement for type A

I have heard many times that the non synthetic B M Trick Shift is really just Type F fluid.

type A was made with whale oil, type f was the best non-whale substitute. dextron in a type A trans will gernade quickly. type F best substitute currently available I think.

DextronII is the recommended fluid for type A fluid transmissions.
I've never heard of one 'grenading' using it.

They just don't shift well using type F for some reason.

I'm likely to change out to a T85 with O/D so it won't be a concern after that.

I ruined a hydramatic in a 51 frazier using dextron. the rebuild kit I scrounged up specified type f, and to mix in something else but I cant remember what...

the type-f fluid has less friction modifying properties than the dexton/mercon fluids. this allows for a quicker clutch apply and less slip which nets you a quicker shift and less heat.

I always run Type F even in the chevrolets we were using back in the day.

I have had many breakages due to misuse/harsh racing or pulling applications...but never a failure due to fluids.

I dont know what is in the fluid, but it works all day and night!
