NEED HELP ASAP!!! - Portable CB Radios

I want to get a portable CB Radio (Handheld) before the run down to Kentucky.

What do I need to look for in one? A Magnetic External Antenna is not that big of a deal if one is needed.

Annyone have any recommendations????

Did you need a CB or a FRS radio?

The CAM'ers use FRS, hence why I was wondering, but CB still great for a highway ride.

As for portable CB, Cobra I know makes a handheld CB, it's a decent unit (I have one - a number of years old though not sure if they sitll make it) and it's antanna is removable and has a standard plug so you can use an external antanna.

I was a big talker back in the day! 2/3KW strong!!!! Knew my stuff. This guy impresses me. Not something I say often.

I have a handheld with it's antenna on the unit. Woks o.k., but as you can imagine the range sucks.... Good for about 200 yards or so.

Go to Radio shack and purchase a hand held unit. That what I did before I got my slim line Uniden. They have a great return policy.

It sucks to here that the handhels still suck EVEN WITH an external antenna.

Where are you guys mounting your CB's? I would like something as out of the way as possible.

Perhaps when John returns from his Vacation, he may have some products avalable????

Think GMRS. CB's are OK for the road and you can get a 40 channel, 4Watt rig with a mag mount and cigarette lighter power hook-up from Radio Shack, for a small outlay. Don't bother with an SSB rig or any fancy stuff, just a simple radio with a noise blanker (NB switch) will do just fine.

Now some advise from Grandpa. I'm a Ham, as are several of the other guys here. The stuff on that guy's website is illegal, to buy, sell, or to operate. Since he's on line with it, one might guess it's a sting, operated by the Friendly Candy Company. Since 9-11, Homeland Security, and the FCC have huge budgets and are very serious about catching "bootleggers" with these illegal, over-powered (50W is 10X the legal limit for CB) and out of band, radios. How serious? Think about a $10,000 fine, and jail time. It's not like the old days when guys were running a KW or two and yammering for the "coal country". The field agents, these days, have serious, sophisticated, equipment, they listen, and they WILL catch you. It's federal law uou're talking about breaking.
Get a GMRS or a legal CB and hook it up. Better yet, get your Ham License (Amateur Radio) and you've got the world at your fingertips. :)

Actually, it's not. His power ratings are on 10 and 12 meter, not 11. Besides, it's not illegal 'till you key the mike on 11 meter. 'Til then, it's just a fancy paperweight.

Argument aside, I have heard good things about the receive side of dude's radios. I want mine so I can listen to help avoid 'traffic jams'.

In the end, I hate to see someone not get their money's worth for their purpose. It's free and legal to look.

Every one of thos radios on that site are pure CRAP.
They consitute the worst trash one can buy.
My suggestion? Get a license, no morse needed anymore.
Then go buy a real bad-a$$ rig from one of these manufacturers:

You will smile uncontrollably as you use a really good rig that performs well and is nice to use. And, you get yet another terrific hobby to kill some time while maybe even learning a thing or two.

But, do yourself a huge favor, and steer clear of the junk.
There is a wise old saying, "The bitter taste of poor quality lingers long after the sweet taste of a cheap price is gone".
Spend a few more bux, get a license. I will even send you study CDs if you want, but you can easily download free stuff to study now.

Last year I bought a cammo colored Midland (I think) handheld from Wal-Mart for $45 and it works just fine.

You could use external antenna, or tap into crappy rear window antenna with CB splitter box. Of course the rear window antenna may be no better than a handheld CB.

Look for opinions on it.

Trying to mount a CB decently in the MM is a pain in the ***.
For MV-IV, I tywrapped an old CB upside down to the bar below the front of the driver seat. Damn thing smoked on the trip.
