View Full Version : Proposed new hood

There's been a lot of talk about hoods around here lately, which I have been interested in myself. I know what "I" want in a hood, because my car has particular needs that most don't in a custom hood. But I also want a hood that looks good, and for the most part, doesn't really look aftermarket or "added on".
I tried to explain what I would like in a new hood in the other posts, but you know what they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Here are two photoshopped pics of exactly what I want for a custom cowl hood for MY car. I am open to thoughts and suggestions. Keep in mind this is not a thread about making custom hoods, this is just what I want for MY car. I suspect however, that most people here would want a hood like my idea for their cars as well.

First off that is a great photochop, it looks real.
Second it's a little too tall for my needs, but I understand why you need one that tall.
Good luck in your quest.

The problem with any aftermarket cowl, is that none of them are anywhere near as wide as needs to be, to come off the factory "raise" of the stock hood. We'd need a cowl that's over 43 inches wide. Plus the straight cowl scoops look stupid added on the stock hood because they don't match the lines at all.

+1 on that statement as well! I like the lines of the car as it is. No sharp corners!! :D

Powersurge, Congrats
This is a great design because it follow our "U" raised part and therefore, doesn't make those multiple stairs steps i've seen that just look too much like a fiber Chitchen Itza or Palenque pyramid. The more the stock lines are followed, IMO, the more it will blend in the car already smooth lines. Our car wouldn't look good with faux side vents, faux deflectors, faux sharks indents and faux ram-air or faux everything. Getting functional and tasty is what we should look for. We must leave the faux thing to those Honda type crowd.
I assume the back part would be functional to allow heat extraction and ventilation and that it would open and close like a stock hood (with maybe a prop since the stock hood cylinders will fight the lost in weight for closing. I know when i tried uncessfully to adapt an older aluminum hood= it was so light that it was hard to shut).
Therefore, this is about 99% of what i had in mind and i'm shure a lot others will chime in and feel the same.
If somebody make a run in fiberglass for an about 30 something pounds saving at ~ 500$ or in carbon fiber to save another 10 pounds for about ~ 1000$, it should work.
My preference would be for fiberglass as i don't think 10 pounds is worth 500$ (I could cut my next 500$ of restaurant spending, get 10 pounds skinner and then have a virtually "free" fiberglass hood with the money saved with a carbonfiber performance !!!).
Good work Powersurge :)
edit: and piss my ex-wife with a better life expentency !!!

True about the width being to narrow, but you could split it down the center and widen it to the size you need and weld a "patch" panel to connect the two halfs together. That way you could customize it to your needs.
The problem with any aftermarket cowl, is that none of them are anywhere near as wide as needs to be, to come off the factory "raise" of the stock hood. We'd need a cowl that's over 43 inches wide. I want that hood! With the stance of the car, big tires on the back and the Mach1 chin spoiler it looks awesome. I really like the shape of it, reminds of of the cowl hoods on the Mark8s.
Whatever happen to the whole hood deal thing we had going before?

Sal, your photochop is exactly what I was attempting to describe here: http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=34139#16
" May I suggest:
Raise the cowl by approximately 2 inches at the wipers, starting at 0 at the grille and follow existing body lines. Just make the existing lines taller as you go back."
Thanx for the great photoshop work. It looks great! I do like it. Perhaps this will be the one that creates consensus!
I am at work and apparently they have settings enabled to not allow me to see this pic.
Anyone have a suggestion on what to change so I can see it in my browser or can the pic be posted somewhere so I could download it???
Otherwise I will see the pic when I get home.

That hood is the business, that is the real deal there. I would but that hood for sure... where is that Skillz guy, he should e mail that to the company he was talking to and see what they think.
As far as seeing the pic, you could save it to your desktop look at it then delete, or maybe open it in a new window, not sure what the restrictions are so it's hard to say.

If your in IE, go under internet options, connections, LAN and see if they have it set on the buisness server. If by proxy there is a X in the box and you see a server number (172.232.41.1) as an example, unclick it then retry.
That hood does look very good!

So thats what it is.... They must have photobucket locked out through our firewall as well.

can we post a poll NOW? If there's 25 takers, then Dennis or skillz might be able to get it done!
I still say get the number of takers together, divide up the cost of the mold and break the mold when we're done!

I'm ready for this one! Nothing under the hood right now that requires it - but the wife already said that if I prefered, I could re-power this car instead of buying a new car when the time came (about two years from now). I will need this hood when Sal installs a 5.4 (maybe stroked/bored to 6.1)!

I have a keen interest in this hood as well, especially with the heat extraction rear opening. Honestly, I really don't like fibreglass unless its hand laid. The sprayed stuff is just too heavy, plus ugly on the back side. If the premium wasn't insane, I'd look for carbon fibre. Light, rigid, and really tough.
Well done, by the way. Wonderful job.

Here's a thought - how much to fab a steel cowl and weld it onto a steel hood - then cut away the hood under the cowl?

Well if your going to do that, why not just cut the OEM hood at the raise and then weld a strip of metal to get the right height?
Would be much quicker and cheaper.

That's what my body guy wants to do with mine. Unfortunately, I need a second hood to do it with for obvious reasons :).

Why?
Make a cut on each side almost to the front most part of the hood.
Lift up and weld in a tapered piece of aluminum.
Bondo and Done.

Yes, for a single, one time application. If there were to be multiple copies made...
It would be interesting to see if a steel cowl could be made w/the corect taper to fit the CV/GM/MM hoods - there might be a larger market than anticipated.
I honestly don't think there is any significant weight savings making a F/G or C/F hood this size that is rigid enough to be hinged - and I'm not lifting off a pin on hood this big!
