My rear window defroster is not working, at all. I have not been able to tell if the heated mirrors are working or not as they have not frosted over since I bought my MM. The LED on the switch goes on, the #10 fuse is good, and the radio reception is fine.
I would appreciate some troubleshooting tips, places to check voltage, or look for a broken wire. I use an Indy shop and was going to have them look into this. They are good for the basics and other jobs I don't have the tools or skills to do right...I am not sure how well they could do on this one. I certainly consider "replacing the rear window" to be the wrong answer at this point.
Thanks in advance one and all.

check the wire connection at the window, and examine the elements on the glass carefully for breaks.

Need to check if there is power at one of the connectors at the rear window.

Sometimes the connector on the rear window arcs and burns itself into isolation...wiggle it (both of them) slightly, don't break em....there is a kit... glue with metal powder in it to repair breaks and to reset the connectors on rear window...even I can do it... (95 CV)...etc... test light from ground to connector in rear...

I just had a few things checked at the Indy shop. The really like my MM. did the alinment Per Carfixers specs...they were impressed.
Anyways...they charged me $42.50 to check the Rear window defroster and say everything looks good but it still does not work. Wrong time of year to be trying to fix and verify this trouble. They did the test anyway and say it should work, but it don't.
There time is worth something but that charge is a little steap for no results.:mad2: I'll take it up with them.

press the rear defog switch wait about a minute and feel the mirror glass. If power is getting the the glass if will feel warm to touch. Or simply breathe out with your mouth close the the mirror if working it will clear as soon as it fogs. As far as the rear grid have you check for voltage at rear connectors on grid?

I have not done any of my own troubleshooting as I am not sure how to go about it. I think the Mech at the indy shop used a prob with a light on it.
What should the voltage be? I will need to do a close inspection for breaks in the grid wires.
The previous owner said he reported the trouble to "the" when it was underwarrenty...they never fixed it either.
I agree that troubleshooting should always start with reviewing the basics...but if this is a "freaky" trouble what could it be???

If you have a volt meter you should have battery voltage on on wire ground on the other. Simply connect the meter to each wire and turn the defroster on, if you have battery voltage you have verified power and gound, if not connect the black wire on the meter to a known good ground such as the chassis and check for voltage, if voltage is present check the ground circuit, if no voltage check fuse and or relay. If you have power and ground set your meter to Ohms scale and hook up to the window connections to verify the integrity of the defroster circuit itself.
