NVIDIA infinite loop problem

First step is to admit the problem... geeklessness.

Rather than trying to get an affirmation of your own diagnosis, lets start at what the symptoms are. Blue screen? What EXACTLY does it say? I know copying down all that text is a bother but ya know its there for a reason.

The error message said that the “nv4_disp” driver was apparently caught in an infinite loop.

Have you tried F8 and going into "last known good configuration" or "safe mode"?

What type of video card do you have?

What type of video card do you have?

duh...
It's an nVidia card.
They are the only graphics cards that run on an NV4_disp driver...

Lisa,

If this fix that BK_GrandMarquis gave you doesn't fix the problem,
your video card my have had a memory failure.
The only other fix is to replace it with another video card.

Now, if you replace it with another nVidia card, you should not have to reinstall any drivers.
The nVidia drivers are Unified, meaning that they work with ALL of nVidia's cards.
Just make suer that you pull the power cord out of the back of the PC before you remove anything.
Even though the PC is turned off, it is still powered on inside.

I had a similar problem (same error code) last week with my computer. Intermittant blacking out of the monitor then go the Blue Screen of Death a few times. Replace my video card, works fine now (after I recieved a good video card). I used a spare from an old computer in the mean time. If you have an old one or know someone who has, swaping out the card may help troubleshoot before you by a new one.

From what I've read, it's been a problem with 2 year old Dell's with that card installed. Mine looked like a couple of capacitors had corroded over like a battery terminal.

Didn't that happen to Dr Who, once? Heck, I'd be willing to bet that nv4_disp is a woman driver, too.

it might be because the install you have may be bad or that when it installs the plugin for your web browser it might be messing with some of the other things that show youtube, photos and other media

thats my take on it, there may be others here with a better understanding
